The Dallas County Jail in Texas – a mega-jail with room for 7,100 inmates, where everyone from small-time criminals to serial killers wait for their day in court. Mass processing of new inmates occurs on a daily basis: Up to 300 new arrivals per day are registered by prison staff. Those who enter must be aware of the turf wars. Gang warfare and turf battles are even more critical on the inside where there is less real estate to divide up. Gang warfare is even more relentless within these prison walls.
9-year-old Tammarick, a member of the Bloods street gang is wedged in between gang buddies in his cell. His criminal career began with his first juvenile detention at the age of ten. This time it is more serious: murder. His trial was over faster than you can say ‘murder.’ Now he awaits sentencing: The judge will decide if Tammarick will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Other prisoners wait in solitary confinement for their sentences. Since they pose a danger to themselves and others, they are in isolation 24 hours a day. Three times a week, they are allowed an hour in the prison yard. Aggressive behavior is part of the deal. The Special Response Team, part of the prison’s special forces, is on duty regularly – subduing out-of-control inmates – by force if necessary.
Amidst these hardened criminals, gang bosses, rapists and murderers, female guards on duty. At Dallas County, 60% of the security force are women. One of them is Officer Nichols, who has over 64 violent offenders in her jurisdiction. Sometimes it is like kindergarten – but more often than not, it is dangerous and frightening.

I can see why correctional officers have an average life expectancy of 59. The daily stress of that job takes a toll.
