For a hundred years, Ireland has been divided in two. To the south, the Republic, an independent country and member of the European Union. To the north, Northern Ireland, belonging to the United Kingdom. In this territory of barely 1.8 million inhabitants, two rival camps coexist: on the one hand the Unionists, mainly Protestants and loyal to the United Kingdom. On the other, the Irish nationalists, mostly Catholics, who want to be attached to the Republic of Ireland and no longer be part of the United Kingdom.

Since the end of the civil war in 1998, which claimed 3,500 lives, hatred has persisted between these two communities. In the capital, Belfast, enemy neighborhoods are separated by 8-meter-high concrete walls. Every evening and weekend, the metal doors that allow you to pass from one district to another are closed.

Each community retains its own traditions. On the Protestant side, on July 12, the victory of Protestant King William III over Catholic King James II is celebrated by gigantic parades and marching bands. On August 8, it’s the turn of the Catholic community to taunt the protests. In the Bogside district of Derry, Dede and his friends make a gigantic bonfire using wooden pallets. They hang the flag of the United Kingdom, and proclaim their hatred of the British crown.

In the underprivileged districts of Belfast and Derry, paramilitary groups exercise parallel justice and conduct punitive expeditions. We met one of their former members, who recounts the brutality of these groups and their recruitment methods. Between criminality and identity rivalry, dive into Northern Ireland, a country where civil war is once again threatening to break out.

This documentary was produced by Ligne de Front and directed by Lucas Gregorio. It was first released in 2022.

  1. It just blows my mind on just how stupid this really is. I can understand the Republican Point of view and that the British should pack up and leave, but to commit acts of violence against people you don’t agree with, and you want to preserve you’re so called “Heritage“ is about the dumbest cause I’ve ever heard of.

The troubles is probably One of the dumbest causes in history.

  2. Religion should not have part if parliament. God bless St. Patrick and St. Columba. Long live the celtic church not Roman that stated with english catholics under Henry 2nd

  3. This really Shouldn't be Protestants against Catholics. It's really "Loyalist" English who "invaded" and are against and persecuting the Irish. ENGLAND, GET OUT OF IRELAND!

  4. In this day and age England should really stop "Occupying" another Country and get the Heck OUT of IRELAND already!! Take all your "Loyalists" with ya as well back to England and STAY THERE!

  5. The union flag is the union of England, Scotland and the north of Ireland. If you don't even know that, Keep your mouth shut, You are a fool !!!

  6. It puzzles me deeply if, as suggested in this video, there are still para-military groups, from both sides, still operating in N.Ireland. If that is the case, why are they sitting around, sucking their thumbs, looking hate at their Orange/Nationalist " enemies " meanwhile allowing Muslims and Africans to take over their country and doing SFA about it?

  7. I left N. Ireland almost 50 years ago and I have no regrets. They are all the same, working class made to hate each other by politicians

  8. Orange Order is a disgrace, the KKK of Britain and the North of Occupied Ireland. Cult of the colonizer. Make me sick to be Scottish.

  9. Read JFK’s 1940 graduate thesis of “why England slept” ! Debunking and cites numerous blunders of Churchill and his disregard of AH of Germany. Again, this is from a man (Churchill) who in 1904 said the empire needs a 40 year war in order to survive. Germany sued for peace 13 times from 1939-44, the earliest 2 weeks into the war and all fell on deaf ears of the British, war was necessary. Read the above by JFK and it all starts making sense of Ireland’s woes.

  10. I sometimes think how is it possible that humanity went so far.. this idiotic narrative of “they try to take our culture” or “identity protection”…Why you people hang on to this insane concept of identity?? In the name of what exactly? So you can sing this or that song in your pub? Use this or that currency? Say “cheers” or “all the best”?? Nowhere in this document says what exactly you all fight about.

YOU ARE ALL THE SAME!!! You breathe the same air and look at the same stars…

It’s all a childish game. It’s time to grow up. Evolution of consciousness people. Just give it up. There are so many more dire problems and this conflict it’s just a smoke screen to keep you occupied so you don’t see the actual issues and changes that happen quietly in the background. As it was in Ancient Rome – bread and games. That’s all you need to control all societies. Divide and conquer.
