Talibés: The Forced Child Beggars of Senegal | Witness | Religious Corruption In Africa Documentary – Everything Law and Order Blog

You see them everywhere in Senegal. Groups of filthy, despondent children, aged between 4 and 15, desperately begging. But these children haven’t run away from home or been abandoned. They’re ’talibes’, students at religious boarding schools. In exchange for a Koranic education, the children are forced to beg for more than 10 hours a day. Those who don’t earn enough money are ruthlessly beaten.

Previously, every African village had its own school. Students used to help their teacher cultivate fields and occasionally ask neighbours for money but the majority of their day was spent studying. Rural migration changed everything. Now the children are sent to city madrassas and most of their day is allocated to begging. And when they’re not begging, they’re learning the Koran by heart and fighting off sleep and hunger as they dodge the master’s whip. We spend several weeks living alongside these children, telling their stories.

This documentary was produced by DGP Productions and directed by DANIEL GRANCLEMENT. It was first released in 2009.

  1. What a brutal existence for the boys. Utterly disgusting how they are being treated in the name of supposedly religion, but in reality it’s slavery.

  2. Goodness me the mentality of the adults is terrible. Those poor kids . What a horrible life. I bet heaps of scary things happen to those boys too. You can see it in their eyes 🙏💔😭

  3. These poor African children have 100 times more freedom than modern European children!!! Look around you… 15 years back when I was a kid we were walking to and from school on our own, having fun, playing out doors while going to and from school. Nowadays parents keep their children closed like some rabbid dogs, throwing them in and out of the car backseats as if they were transmitting some terrible virus. Children aren't even allowed to go outdoors during their free time to just ride a bike all around their city or town, just having to sit in their corner like a dog.
