A new synthetic drug is killing more than gun crime, homicide and car accidents combined. 100 times stronger than heroin, the deadly opioid fentanyl is cheap, potent and small enough to send in the post (from China via the dark web). These market forces have seen it replacing the heroin supply, spreading unprecedented death, destruction and misery. And now, due to its strength and low cost, the drug is also starting to appear in party drugs, such as cocaine and cannabis – with fatal results. We visit the epicentre of the fentanyl epidemic to meet with health care workers, activists, fentanyl dealers and people who use it, and learn what we should expect if the fentanyl epidemic spreads outside of North America.

This documentary was produced by Magellan TV and directed by Dominic Streeter. It was first released in 2020.

  1. This is the beginning of the apocalypse… first the most vulnerable go to drugs, and homelessness, then the falling economy takes the next level of people, then war, and of course climate change and pandemics… actually everyone will need more drugs, just to deal with the massive suffering about to come down on humanity.

  2. The Fentanyl crisis just as any before and after, is mainly a socio economic crisis reflected in the bandaid people get to patch up themselves – as poorly as it may work.

What this documentary points out really well is that a tremendous portion of substance abuse is indeed correctly labeled as self medication. Several respectable studies support this.
When society fails to offer adequate and easily accessible help, people seek comfort where they get it reliably. Peace of mind is the most elemental thing humans need, much more than even health, shelter or food.

Social welfare states which offer a generous net for people to catch that have fallen and possibly don't get on their feet on their own or even with help anytime soon, experience much lower rates of substance abuse this severe, let alone OD.
