War Tourism: The Foreign Volunteers Fighting ISIS in the Streets of Raqqa | Witness | Documentary – Everything Law and Order Blog

Inspired by the mythology of the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War, over 300 foreign volunteers chose to give up their comfortable lives and go fight ISIS in Raqqa. We filmed them there, fly-on-the-wall style, fighting, talking, laughing, being attacked by suicide bombs and sniper fire. We were with them until Raqqa was freed. And then we followed them back home – changed forever.

Every night, between July and October 2017, young men with no previous military experience pushed through the most dangerous streets of the world. They conquered Raqqa, block after block. They met death and violence. And eventually, along with the Kurdish and Arab forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces, they liberated Raqqa and ended the reign of the most murderous cult of the XXI century. Some of them went back home. We were there when they told their story to their families.

“I gave my life to help the people of Northern Syria, to stop the terrorists, but my government is more interested in trying to charge me with terrorism instead”, complains former British Army soldier, Kevin. Josh, 22 from California, also finds the homecoming hard. “I miss Syria badly. War begot meaning to my life.” Made by acclaimed journalists Paul Moreira and Pedro Da Fonseca, this is the untold story of the young Westerners who left everything behind to fight ISIS.

This documentary was produced by Premières Lignes and directed by Paul Moreira and Pedro de Fonesca. It was first released in 2019.

  1. Anyone recall the MSM chanting how fantastic the emerging Arab Spring was back in 2012, Egypt and Syria in particular…… even a quick glance now , 12 years later, shows the murderous horror of a civil war that was shamelessly exploited by those with too much deskbound power and clearly no compassion for their fellow humans and choose to leave half of the Middle East in dust and trust us herd of Westerners to read rubbish like The S*n and finish our warehouse shift to go home and get drunk.
Our famines to walk this cherished earth that we’ve destroyed over and over again will be shaking their heads and think of our behaviour just like we are told how easily we we deceived in 2003 by Bush Cabal to invade a country we’d propped up for decades on absolute lies. There’s myriad more examples but I’m sure you get my point. Time to work together and halt this militaristic might which obviously demands a foe. 🇬🇧📚👏☘️ #OurHistory

  2. And of course those so called conservatives who support Kurdish so called communists are also hideous (they of course saying that they hate communism, hypocrites)

  3. Yeah, fight for Western things like abortions, high divorce rate, gambling, feminism… such hideous things what to do, do not be slave of Western hypocrisy

  4. What yall don’t know is some of these guys are actually seriously trained at very high levels my former teammate from SF fought with these guys on an American contract

  5. Its an absolute sham that its legal for these idiots to go abroad to fight isis, yet if anyone goes abroad to fight FOR isis they get prosecuted (or not even allowed back in to their own country). Talk about government overeach deciding what people can do when they are in a different country!? If its illegal to go abroad and join isis, it should be illegal to say, fight for ukraine against russia etc.
