Watch here to find out about the opposing opinions regarding prison life in Japan. From one perspective, a French computer wizz, unfairly accused of stealing from the cryptocurrency company he was working for, tells of his experience awaiting trial. During this period of solitary confinement, he endured the mind-numbing nothingness imposed, allowed only to sit, read and write, even his seating positions were prescribed with only two available options.

In stark contrast to this account, witness the popular Japanese festival that takes place annually just outside prison walls. The Japanese flock from all over to take part in the festivities which include performances from local pop stars, the opportunity to dress up and take photos as prison guards, and to dine on the ‘average’ prison meal, a special treat that people will wait in an hour long queue for.

This documentary was produced by Nova Prod and directed by Marie Linton. It was first released in 2020.
