How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY) – Everything Law and Order Blog

Learn how to repair a deep scratch in the paint of your car. In this case someone keyed my car so I will show you how to remove a deep scratch from that using a touch up paint pen. Fixing scratches in your car’s paint is simple and if they are just clear coat scratches it is even easier.

To remove deep scratches you need to clean the scratch, sand the scratch, use touchup paint on the scratch, sand that paint smooth with the factory paint job, add clear coat, and wet sand that smooth with the factory paint. Then you can polish the whole panel and you are done!

  1. The explanations are step by step, well thought out, backed up by clear visuals. Thank you so much Chris for the awesome conent you produce! You're so helpful to so many of us!

  2. So it's going to take $18 but all those 5 kinds of greet sand paper will cost you over another $20 over + a shipping fee from Jeff bozos AMZN.

  3. If you're going to do a DIY video, at least pick a difficult paint color. White is literally the easiest color you could do. I can't compliment you on the video since… I have no freaking clue how good the scratch looks afterwards.

  4. Thx great video, Chris!!! QUESTION. At 19'17" you start off with a dry sand. But then you start adding soapy water. Is that the order… first dry and then soapy water? Does it matter?

  5. Flat white. Very challenging. Also, if the base coat is level with surrounding before adding clear, then adding the clear and sanding is just going to take you back to base coat.
Better to add clear to base and then fill the scratch

  6. T3U color code not available from the source linked. Suggestions? I would prefer to get the "all-in-one" paint pen which includes the abrasive tip.

  7. Outstanding. 100% applicable. I was pressure washing and little by little the frame (which at the time was far away from the car) wiggled its way from vibrations into the door of my car and made its way along the entire door. Pretty deep scratch.

  8. why do you yankees always talk so much unnecessary nonsense this whole video was literally 75% bullshit and 25% what i wanted to see

  9. How do we tackle this if there is no paint option with primer mixed in? Do we just add an extra step before using the paint or do we sand in between primer and paint?

  10. Hey Chris, I followed all of this and im at the polishing stage, but around the scratches where I sanded it still looks really hazy and matted, not at all glossy and doesn't blend in very well. Do I just need to polish some more or is it possible I sanded too much?

  11. Thanks, good vid! Now we just need to get you to do 2 or 3 vids per month👍

Edit: Just saw your comment where you said it took 2 weeks to film this video. So, let’s just shoot for 1 video per month. Who needs a personal life.

  12. Tried this on my car, found my cars paint colour code and bought the correct colour pen but the paint isn’t the same and now my car just looks worse with 2 lines of different colour paint. My car just looks worse now I shouldn’t have done this. Good tutorial just didn’t work out the same for me :/

  13. I started this process and it was going great up through the painting step, but after giving it more than enough time to dry and sanding it down to be level with the surrounding paint, the touchup paint lost some of its color, started to look silvery instead of blue in some spots. Did I do something wrong? Please help!

  14. Help! After applying the paint, I sanded outside the paint area and scuffed some clear coat and I can't add clear coat on top of scuffed surface. Does anyone have ideas?

  15. Amazing instructions. I liked the video and i love all your videos bro! But I gotta say I just tried this on a deep scratch on my dark metallic grey color crv, and it did not come out the way I wanted to 🙁 I followed everything step by step but i can still see the paint strokes from when i first applied it. I sanded it down exactly like in this minus the 800 grit, I used 1000 because thats all i could find, but everything else was the same. And after I wet sanded down with the 3000 and 5000 before the polish I seemed to have etched away some more of the original paint 🙁 This was my first time trying this kind of work so i can admit i probably sucked at the repair, but I tried my best to be meticulous with it. I ended up just going through to the end with the polish and called it a day lol. Any tips for fixing scratches on a dark color car would be great, or a video if possible?

  16. I love how you summarize the video at the start and continued with deeper explanations. It helps once you’ve understood the concept but want to follow the steps.

  17. I have a few small spots, less than the size of a dime on my hood. Do I really need to sand the clear coat on the whole hood? I drive a Silverado, its a lot of sanding for two very small spots.

  18. Youre a life saver Chris! Cant thank you enough. My wife took my brand new truck ( Ram Rebel) and wrecked the front driver edge while parking.
Now i know how to fix the scratches but the bumper on a rebel has a powder coated/ textured finish. How do i fix that? Couldnt find anything on youtube. Please help, thank you 🙏
