How to Replace a Clock Spring (airbag light & horn not working) – Everything Law and Order Blog

Learn how to turn off your airbag light and fix a horn that doesn’t work by replacing your clock spring. Replacing a clock spring is very simple, saves us over $600 and takes less than an hour. I will show you how to safely remove the airbag and steering wheel so you can replace the clockspring at home using common hand tools.

To figure out I had a bad clock spring, I used an obd2 scanner to scan the airbag light and got codes b1801 and b1811 which is an open squib circuit, which means the clock spring is bad. Another way to tell the clock spring is bad is the horn doesn’t work and/or the steering wheel buttons don’t work.

  1. Chris I appreciate you!
Do you happen to have the steering wheel nut torque spec for a 2001 Toyota Echo? Having a hard time with web searching it – I only get wheel lug nut specs.

  2. NOT every clxok spring is the same. Just did a Dodge Caliber and the CS has no clips but is screwed to both stocks and from both sides. MUCH more involved than your example.

  3. @chrisfix.
Hi chris. I have been watching and enjoing your videos. Like them. Im strugelling with my squib stearing wheel. My squib shows the airbag light on but horn is working. Replaced with an other one where the only diference is the letter at the end, on the new one airbag light gone, horn not working. Any tips? 5K0953569C my part number 5K0953569D the new one.

  4. Very informative and all angles seem to be covered, however I still believe that for me it's going to be a case of psoc and not DIY! Many thanks Chris.

  6. 2015 Frontier (130K miles) clock spring is starting to die. Audio controls don’t work in the 12:00 but do in 3 and 9…. This was immensely helpful and will save me hundreds of dollars in labor costs…

  7. I saw another video a guy replacing this same part because his prius horn was not working. He replaced & worked after. I guess it fixes both issues

  8. Chris i know this post is old but im desperate, I replaced the blower motor on my 2016 nissan versa note and didn't have the wheels straight when i disconnected the steering shaft and wheels were turned, now steering wheel is off center and a slight rattle from floor board area ,every time i disconnect the shaft and straighten after driving wheel goes back to off center, What can i do to fix it,

  9. I bought aftermarket clock spring and installed it. i immediately noticed my blinker wasn't returning, and my steering stuck on me after a few days of driving. A technician told me to buy the part from the dealership and install it. I just ordered one today and am getting it tomorrow. Hopefully, this will make the blinker auto return works. .

  10. Hello

  11. Hey bro what if I had my clockspring replaced not long ago but still have my airbag light on I’ve scanned it and gotten the fault code B0101 for my 2001 Altezza Gita JCE15 any tips would be appreciated team thank you!

  12. Chris, yours is the only Prius Gen 2 clockspring replacement video on YouTube that deals with the Steering Angle Sensor. Kudos! There's a reason you have 10 million subscribers. 🙂

  13. Hey Chris, I have a 2005 Prius. My airbag light just came on, but there are no readable codes at all. Some, but not all of the buttons, stop working unless the wheel is turned to various positions. Horn works though. Do you think that the clockspring is the culprit? Because I have no detectable codes, I kind of have to start guessing and replace one component at a time until the light goes away.
