Transmission removal, replacement, and installation. Learn how to remove a transmission so you can replace your clutch or flywheel, or so you can rebuild your transmission and install a new one in your car or truck.

In this video I show you the 10 simple steps on how to replace a transmission. I am doing this on a rear wheel drive 98 Mustang but the process is very similar on other rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and even automatic cars and trucks. 1. To answer the most common questions in the comments section:
1.) Quality videos like this take a lot of time to produce. This and the next took me over 300hrs.
2.) Follow me on Instagram "ChrisFixit" for daily updates and tips and tricks.
3.) The exhaust on the car is the performance exhaust, just used on the track.
4.) The speedometer is fine… it spun all the way around at the last drift event and I havent had a chance to take the gauge cluster out and push it back to the other side of the peg.
5.) The other red Mustang is from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-exs1iMLFU

  2. I have an econoline with an automatic E40D transmission. I installed my transmission after replacing the front seal. But after installing, filling up with fluid, and trying to start, it barely struggled to crank over after a few tries then wouldn't crank up at all. It was hesitating to crank up and sounded like either the flexplate or crankshaft was seizing up. All of the bolts were tightened to specs, the gear shifter was properly adjusted, and the torque converter spins fine when it's not attached to the engine or flexplate but once I install the transmission and try starting it up it won't even crank or spin. I also tried spinning the flexplate with the crankshaft, but it is also stuck or seized up and both the crankshaft and flexplate wont spin. I also tried spinning the flex plate with the transmission off and it still won't budge…do you know what could be the issue??

  3. but i dont have an even driveway🥲 cause of a big tree the driveway is cracked so is lifted in one side and the other is sinked, the better side wich is almost even is florida sand… already did an oil change… still alive, when putting down the car the jackstands decided to sink in the sand… aaaand my little 1.5 ton little car jack which i left as more security fell to one side… imean the positive side of all is it took maybe 30 min to lift the car but only 5 seconds to lower it🤣🤣🤣

  4. My throw out bearing went bad in my 94 ranger last night lol. I didn't even look up this video, it was in my reccomended. My truck is easy to get to the transmission because it sits on a 3.5" lift kit so my truck already sits about 3 feet off the ground lol.

  5. Well, that doesn't look so bad… with the right tools.

Tip: If you don't know what __ft/lbs feels like with a regular wrench, use your torque wrench to tighten something else to that spec and pay attention to what it feels like. Hold your torque wrench at the same distance as the length of the reg. wrench you plan on using.

  6. so how am I supposed to change the transmision fluid next time when nothing comes out? I think that means there is not enough transmission fluid as before you changed the transmission because before the replacement the fluid was coming out and now it is not. 26:23

  7. Serious question if ur jacks stands fail and ur floor jack fails which would be pretty unlikely and that car wasn’t behind the one your working on with the drive shaft being out ur car would just roll backwards unless you have your emergency brake on right?

  8. Hey Chris,
I filled my truck with transmission fluid from the shifter hole and kept adding but it never came out the fill hole and just leaked out the gearbox instead. It’s not going toward the back towards where the fluid is held. Do I have to turn the car on to check the level and so that it circulates?

  9. God I would pay big money for your help with this. I worked all day and all night trying to get my transmission in my truck 97 obs it just wouldn’t goi worked on it till my arms were literally shaking. I just had to give up on it
