Alle, an app that uses AI to provide personalised fashion tips to users, has been recognised by Google as the best app of the year in India.

Announcing its picks for Google Play’s Best Apps and Games of 2024 in India on Tuesday, November 19, the tech giant said that five out of seven apps on the winners list were developed by Indian companies.

The AI-powered fashion stylist app has also been named as this year’s “Best for Fun” app on Google Play Store.

Founded by two former Meesho employees in 2023, Alle’s app offers an AI chatbot service for “expert fashion advice”. Through the app, users can shop for clothing wear across multiple brands and retailers. It also offers a virtual try-on feature that lets users see how the outfit looks on them before purchasing it.

Expressing gratitude for winning the best app in India award, Prateek Agarwal, the co-founder and CEO of Alle, said, “Our next big goal is to make Alle the ultimate destination for discovering and shopping the latest fashion trends. We’re working on two key priorities: ensuring our inspiration is always ahead of the curve with the most current trends, and making every single piece in every look instantly shoppable.

Besides Alle, another AI app called Headlyne was declared as the winner of the “Best for Personal Growth” category. Headlyne uses AI to deliver personalised news, showcasing the increasing sophistication of AI in understanding individual preferences, Google said in its blog post.

Amid the rise in AI-powered mobile apps, the company said that Indian users on Google Play Store accounted for 21 per cent of global downloads of AI mobile apps this year. “Many of these solutions come from Indian developers who are also embracing AI, with almost 1,000 apps and games in the country incorporating this technology,” it added.

While apps developed by AI giants such as OpenAI and Perplexity did not make it to the list, Google Play gave its nod to Meta-owned WhatsApp as the best multi-device app in India this year. Meanwhile, the award for best app for large screens went to Sony LIV as it offers “a high-quality, immersive viewing experience across bigger screen devices like tablets.”

Indus Battle Royale: Best Made-in-India gaming app

Pune-based gaming startup Supergaming won in the “Best Made in India” category for the second time in a row thanks to its mobile app Indus Battle Royale. According to Google, Indus’ integration of Indian visuals and storytelling within the popular Battle Royale genre makes the gaming app a winner

“Our team spent over three years crafting Indus, with detailed characters, environments, and innovative gameplay features like our alternate win condition called “Cosmium” and our unique “Grudge” revenge system,” Roby John, the co-founder and CEO of SuperGaming said.

Outlining his vision for Indus to crack into the top tier of Battle Royale gaming titles, John said, “A core part of this journey involves establishing Indus as a competitive esports title. […] Esports is a key pillar of our roadmap, and we’re committed to nurturing a thriving competitive scene that brings together passionate gamers.”

He added that the startup’s immediate focus is on perfecting every aspect of the game.
