Samsung is said to be working on a new foldable phone that could rival Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Edition, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. According to a recent report by South Korea’s ETNews, Samsung is developing a multi-fold phone that will feature a unique inward folding design, unlike Huawei’s outward folding mechanism. The device is expected to launch sometime in 2025 with the exact date unknown as of now.
The key difference between Samsung’s upcoming multi-fold phone and Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Edition lies in the folding mechanism. While Huawei’s device folds outward Samsung’s device is expected to fold inward. This inward folding design not only makes the phone more compact when closed, but it also provides better protection for the screen, potentially improving its durability and reducing the risk of drops and impacts.
The device is rumoured to feature a screen size between 9 and 10 inches when fully unfolded, which positions it as a hybrid between a phone and a tablet. This larger screen could offer users the benefits of a tablet while still being compact enough to fit in a pocket.
Samsung’s multi-fold device will reportedly fold twice, creating a new category of foldable phones that offers more flexibility than current single or double-fold devices. Sources familiar with the project suggest that the device is still in development, with several of Samsung’s partners already working on related projects to support the phone’s unique form factor. This upcoming multi-fold device is expected to be part of Samsung’s broader foldable phone lineup, which is rumoured to launch in the second quarter of 2025.
In addition to the multi-fold device, there have been rumours that Samsung might also be exploring a rollable phone concept. This potential device could feature a 12.4-inch display that extends and retracts, offering a larger screen experience without the need for a foldable design.
