Bodycam footage shows the moments surrounding an intense chase involving a suspected car thief and Oklahoma City Police on May 11. Authorities said Chance Sanders allegedly stole a woman’s car while she was shopping. Once Sanders took off, he realized the woman’s two babies were in the backseat but continued to flee the scene. Law&Crime’s Elizabeth Millner breaks down what happened next.

Shamari Smith said she left her car running but assumed she locked it before running into the store. When she came outside, her car and infants were gone. Police said Sanders stole her car within minutes of her entering the store. Sanders later crashed and flipped the vehicle. The children were not injured thanks to the help of witnesses at the scene.

I don't know how many times my parents left me in the car with the windows down and the keys in the ignition for an hour or more. I guess it was a different time back then, or we weren't in an area with these types of crimes. I have left my kids in the car when running into the gas station. I crack the windows, lock the doors, and make sure I am back within a few min. Never would I leave the car running and unlocked with the kids. I wouldn't leave it running without kids. I'm not sure why anyone would do that nowadays.

When I was young, no mother took her babies to the store or anywhere else she would need to run in for something. She left the babies with dad or another trusted adult.
