Bodycam: ‘Drunk Teacher’ Admits to Having Glass of Wine Before Showing Up to Court – Everything Law and Order Blog

In a surprising turn of events, Kimberly Coates, the Oklahoma teacher who was arrested in August for allegedly showing up to school drunk, has found herself in legal trouble once again. This time, Coates was arrested for allegedly appearing intoxicated at the Payne County Courthouse, where she was scheduled to attend a hearing related to her previous public intoxication charge. Body camera footage captures Coates telling officers that she “didn’t understand” why she was being arrested, but she later admitted to having consumed a glass of wine before heading to the courthouse.

According to court documents, an on-duty deputy at the courthouse noticed Coates entering the building unsteady on her feet. The deputy observed that Coates had glazed eyes, slow and slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol. Despite her apparent intoxication, the deputy allowed Coates to attend her court appearance after processing her through security. However, the deputy continued to monitor Coates’ movements through surveillance video, noting that she had to use the railing and wall to steady herself as she made her way from the second to the third floor. Once Coates was finished in the courtroom, the deputy approached her and confirmed that she had admitted to drinking wine in the morning. Consequently, Coates was arrested for public intoxication, handcuffed, and taken to the Payne County Jail without incident.

  1. This is just humiliating for her. Stop broadcasting her please, she needs help. People saying she wants to help herself, she will get help but she is so far gone into alcoholism that she needs one on one help. Throwing her in jail is no longer doing its purpose.

  2. It warms my heart that no one's talking smack about her in the comments, rather recognize that alcohol dependency is a developed and even heredity disease.
If she was a punk, I'm sure there wouldn't be as much sympathy, but because she just seems so broken down, the compassion towards these occurrences show there's still so much hope for humanity.

  3. I feel sorry for her because since she is alcohol dependent if she doesn’t have some alcohol in her system she is going to go through withdrawal. A doctor could have prescribed benzodiazepines to help her through withdrawal and she could have shown up to court not intoxicated. Then again, it’s also possible she would just use the drugs and alcohol together which would be really dangerous. I’m not sure what alternative she had except getting totally clean before the court date and that just isn’t realistic.

  4. I'm an alcoholic, fortunately I've been sober for over two years, I showed up at work drunk, I drank at work, I also went to the police under the influence of alcohol when I testified. I understand this woman, she is sick, I hope she will find help like me.

  5. I rarely say things like this, but I honestly think that this lady is really hurt. I just hope she gets the help that she needs because she’s gonna wind up getting in worse trouble than she’s already in.

  6. I lost my dad to alcoholism and my brother is going the same way. Watching this lady is very sad, she’s clearly in a desperate way, I feel for her husband as this affects the whole family

  7. Mannnnn. Poor woman. Teaching takes a huge toll on your mental health (not to mention Oklahoma being near dead last in the country for education) and there's no excuse for showing up drunk to both court and school. but to have it broadcasted twice is just, ugh. I can't imagine. Glad she's finally getting help.

  8. i feel bad for her husband. from an alcoholic with a little over a year sober- its the ones around us that we love that we hurt the most through our addiction.

hope this lady finds her personal rock bottom or finds the right help. it took personal rock bottom for me and im still far from perfect and just a slip away from this.
