A former California sergeant is facing multiple charges for excessive use of force during a DUI traffic stop in March. Authorities said Dustin Witt repeatedly stomped and kicked Louis Jackson after he stopped being combative with deputies. Witt resigned from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office in June during the internal investigation which resulted in multiple charges of assault. The Law&Crime Network’s Sierra Gillespie has the details.

  1. He 100% swung at him, but he didn’t lung at him? He swung on him, they started to argue & then he snapped started to swing again when the officer grabbed his arm, but the anchor made it seem like he just randomly lunged at him in an argument? The guy obviously was in the wrong, he’s lucky he didn’t die, I was just expecting to see a different set of events happen lol

  2. I've only ever heard someone breathe that way, with that noise, due an airway restriction after a brutal fight or attack, and the officer had the audacity to say: "stop playin' like that" while trying to have him roll over afterwards to which he was unresponsive. I have no idea what his injuries are, but I could speculate there's a chance of concussion and possibly some brain damage. If that cop hadn't have been stopped by the other cop, things probably would have ended much worse for this guy. This was truly excessive and unnecessary, and could probably be argued as a personal and/or emotional violent attack.

I feel that, at the least, officers should undergo a preliminary psychological evaluation as a prerequisite to joining, and then regular psych evals throughout their career (perhaps every 3-6 months). I feel that a lot of cops join because they truly want to help people by serving and protecting their community, but there are some who just want the power and an excuse to wield it, others may break under the pressures of the job, and then there are possibly others who may be enticed by the power they wield. We need to find ways by which to weed out the emotionally and mentally unstable cops, as well as those who seek – either initially or eventually – to take advantage of their position.
