On August 13, 2024, Anchorage police responded to a 911 call involving Easter Leafa, who was reported to have threatened her sister with a knife. What followed was a series of events that ended with Officer Alexander Roman discharging his weapon, leading to Easter’s death. The State of Alaska’s Department of Law, after reviewing the case, concluded that the officer’s actions were legally justified. But does the newly released bodycam footage contradict the report?

  2. I grew up in South Africa and when I studied law, I just realised how bad American laws are. From the very start to the Jury system. America is just a glorified mess

  3. That cop committed murder. There were many other options. She was a child and if 4 cops couldn't handle that situation without killing her then they need different jobs. If you notice in the video she's holding the knife by the blade which is not how someone who plans to be aggressive whole hold a knife. Why even use less lethal if your going to use deadly force before you even know if it worked. I'm sure she would have dropped the knife from getting hit with 40cal less lethal from 5 feet away since she barely had ahold of it in the first place. Shame on you officer. I hope you read this. You know you were wrong.

  4. Sure, give the wacko more chances to stab people. 😑 What a stupid argument, claiming those being confronted with a knife wielding wacko are at fault for not backing up, especially with someone behind them. How are you gonna back up if the person behind you doesn't move? Idiots.

  5. The way she had the knife looked like she was dropping it just hadnt yet… just an opinion i dont care one way or another as it wasnt me

  6. She didn't even have 'Positive Control' of that knife in her hand where she could cause any substantial damage to any of those officers. She sat there with a blanket over her head and body. Her peripheral vision was blind the entire time on their approach. If one of the officers were to physically take her down with a bear hug grab, he could have done so with little or no injury. Are today's officers so scared to get and injury as little as a simple cut, scratch, black eye, sprained wrist or bruise in responding to a domestic call? Not every call does an officer have to pull their gun first, and if so, lets just take away the batons, pepper spray, body armor, and tasers.

Escalation of deadly force comes with levels to which one acting in an official capacity can use it. These officers are ignoring all of those rules and jumping to the head of the line in established rules when using deadly force and using it prematurely. Their lawyers are teaching them how to explain themselves out of manslaughter charges when they do to the point it's becoming commonplace.

  7. For officer safety he should go get a job working at a 7-11….. the old cops would take a night stick and take the knife away .

  8. Cops have no ability to control a scene with someone in a mental health crisis, except by use of force. The entire demeanor of the officer issuing commands served to agitate the girl and escalate an otherwise benign situation. It is telling that the family members were not in fear of this girl. Had there been a skilled mental health worker on scene to engage the girl, with officers remaining silent in the background, I am certain the outcome would have been positive. The first thing I thought is why didn't the officers at least have a coordinated plan; first using the nonlethal weapons. Why not back off and provide distance in this situation.

  9. In my opinion since she only had a knife and no other mention of any other type of "weapon" they should of all had les than lethal at the ready and nothing that is lethal at the ready. They do not know nor do we know what her intentions were when she stepped inside. As far as she knew she was going to step inside and talk to them or just go inside and stand there and say nothing and take no further actions. She made no aggressive move at all and even if they are at the ready with les than lethal they all would have still had time to react if she did "make a move".

Is merely walking and holding a knife making you so afraid of "being injured" that you must shoot someone? Growing up I had far worse than that going on and we all just duked it out and once it was over we went out separate ways for awhile and later if we wanted w talked it out and hung out together again.

  10. I agree 100% I do not think all cops are bad because A police officer saved my life. But I do believe that we need an overhaul of our justice system! That young girl should not have lost her life she didn’t even have the handle of the knife she was lightly holding the blade not threatening anyone! I think police should not be able to have a fire arm until they are at least Sargent They can take down people with tasers if they need further power they can call someone with more training.

  11. 14:41 HORRIBLE HORRIBLE deescalation skills ! I think I already know which officer shoots first before I even watch any further! That whole room full of cops are responsible for allowing “Officer Terrets” lead “negotiations” if that’s what you want to call it. So sad!!! 🤦‍♂️😢

  12. Pretty much every police encounter ever could be improved in some way… but plan and simple this is self defense. She has a knife in her hand and she quickly got up and went towards the officers. Tasers, bean bags etc don't always work. When deadly force is coming your way, you execute deadly force back. Tasers have such a low success rate I would NEVER rely on that to protect myself.. Police are there performing their duty. They were called and they performed their duty.

I don't know of any officers that have to negotiate with suspects. Especially ones presenting deadly threats. They obviously could've tried talking to the girl but we all know there is already a language barrier. There is NO obligation for the officers to be able to speak Somalia. And they can't simply leave her be with the threats she has made and being armed with a knife. What de-escalation are people expecting from this though? A pat on the shoulder to try and calm her down? Because obviously talking to her doesn't work if there is a language barrier.

So my opinion, officers did what they needed to do in that instance, and shouldn't be charged or sued for anything. But as always, theres always something that can improved. Maybe allow the family member to talk to them to break the language barrier a bit. Keep back some. Officers should really be giving themselves a good 15-20' when the suspect is expected to have a knife. It's good they had lethal and non lethal ready. If things went a little slower it might've been beneficial to instigate and hit her with the 40 to try and subdue her before she gets an opportunity to get up. Tasers are NOT going through that blanket so I'm glad they didn't bother with those worthless tools. They have a huge failure rate and just aren't good in most situations

  13. They are really never justified because they choose that job. They have no right to whine when it gets dangerous. Its pretty counterproductive to have cops in the 1st place when you are in need of help but have to consider is calling them will be worse than dealing with the situation alone.

  14. The cops were doing what I would call witness control, so if they do any wrong doing there's no witnesses to their crimes!

  15. The 16 yo girl was holding the knife by the blade, not the handle. She was not going to stab no one. It appeared like she was going to hand it over.
Take a closer look at how she's holding the knife. The cops saw this too.
Btw, why not the taser??? Just automatically go for deadly? A16 yo minor??

  16. She is not even holding knife in threatening way! Her hand is on the blade itself rather than the handle. I understand that observation could be one that is difficult to notice in real time but there are several things those officers should have done differently including their positioning based on weapon that may be needed. It’s truly amazing how creative writing skills are still utilized when they know cameras are on.

  17. They knew that they were dealing with a teenager who was suffering mentally. He had all this time to prepare for dealing with the child, and the method that they chose was lethal force. He didn't use a tazer or a baton, he went straight for the gun. As bad as i feel for the family, when you have a loved one going through a mental health crisis do everything in your power to deal with it yourself, no matter how long it takes. Whatever you do, don't call armed men to help you, because you may lose that loved one. What do you expect when their only concern is going home to their family. They have no connection to your family and do not care about your family. Do not call armed men unless you're prepared to lose them.

  18. Reminds me of the poor woman with the pot of boiling water from a couple of months ago. No real threat, but a really magnified "perceived" threat. Also, what was the rush? So what if she sat on the balcony for another half hour? With no one (cops) talking and pestering her? Or could they not have provided, say, a female social worker to try to calm the poor girl along with a family member? Again, zero common sense and zero situational awareness on the part of the "officers". They knew there was a language issue. They had a number of non-lethal alternatives. Lousy police work.

  19. I'm not going to watch this because I have a teenage daughter… And I know it will enrage me beyond comprehension…
All I can say is, STOP CALLING THE FUCKING COPS FOR HELP. Call family and friends. People… wake the fuck up. We live in tyranny. "qualified immunity" PROVES that beyond a shadow of a doubt. If we are not "equal under the law" we live in tyranny, that is all there is to it.

  20. The minute they came in with their guns drawn I would have said no no no no no no no no get out out out out out!!!

  21. Looks like a home invasion to me, family objects to guns with fear.Because they appear to be scared and waving guns. They knew they would shoot the girl due to the big wet spot in their pants.🙃🇺🇸

  22. The entire point of having the 40mm launcher is to use it first and then use lethal if that doesn’t work. This cop just opened fire at the same time. A 16 year old girl 😢

  23. Taser: not with a loose sheet over her body.

Pepper spray: maybe, but doesn’t cause her to drop the knife

Dog: no, she has a knife

40mm: maybe if there are enough shots, she’d drop the knife

Full auto rubber bullets would work, but they don’t use them for some reason.

Lethal: probably going to end this way. A knife is a lethal weapon, you don’t mess around when a person with a knife is advancing towards you.

  24. One thing to note is at 12:47 in the footage she is not holding the knife by the handle but the blade instead . These cope are not well trained very well to assess a situation . So therefore the need for deadly force is NOT justified at all . Clearly she was NOT holding the knife in a threatening manor .Just my observation .

  25. The language barrier was obviously an issue. I didn't see an effort by the police to have a family member translate to the 16 year old minor. Verbal commands of de-escalation were very much needed. Condolence to the family. After grieving, I hope the family can find an attorney and sue the police department. This death could've been avoided. That one cop telling the family he was there to escalate the situation, then said de-escalate the situation. Had me wondering if he knew what he was doing. Oh, I believe he was the cop that shot that 16 year old girl. Smh. Alaska pd shame on y'all, do better.

  26. Ridiculous, the cops made everything worse. When they got there the family were chilling out watching tv kid running around nobody was fearing for their life. Looked like the sister called without mums permission. Tragic

  27. Damn shame they brought a gun to a knife fight and a 16 yr old girl at that! No they did not have to use deadly force to subdue her. They could've used pepper spray! She would've dropped it! Nothing but blue line cowards at their finest!!!!🤦‍♂️
