An 11-year-old Volusia County, Florida girl was arrested for prank-texting 911 claiming her friend had been kidnapped — but in reality — the whole thing was a hoax. The Law&Crime Network’s Angenette Levy discusses this incident and its implications with the department’s sheriff, Mike Chitwood. The case has drawn attention due to the young age of the individual involved and the nature of the false report.

The new usuals…
Florida…again
There should be more sheriffs like Mike Chitwood in the world, or at least far less parents in the world than this girls.
Typical American stuff.
Why would u do that
Faked video.
Show her face or parents face
She needs to send to juvenile. She off easy.. 👎👎
I would never in a billion years have done this as a child. My parents would’ve been apoplectic 😮
Maybe she's ret*rded
In my opinion, children should not be arrested, jailed or subjected to any form of punishment.
I called the police at twelve years old!
Solid advice from a solid parent
lmao
At 12 years old I was cooking dinner, cleaning house and watching my baby brother. My mother was a single mother, working all day and going out at nights. I didn't have to be told or supervised. I was raised in the 60's and 70's. It seems like something happened with this last generation of kids. No respect or accountability. We didn't have to be told what not to do. It's common sense. I think Officer's should go to schools and discuss with kids what will happen if they do these things. As parents have to work, kids are unsupervised alot of times. There are parents who obviously allow them to run wild. But, most work. With high cost of sitters and daycare, people just don't have the money. There are great kids out there. But, not all are. There is more drugs, guns and crime than ever before. In my childhood I didn't know there was such a thing as drugs and kids killing people. Stop the madness now. Thank you to all our law enforcement men and women, who serve and protect. I hope this young girl has learned from these Officer's. She has her whole life to make a difference. Parents need to stop turning a blind eye to what their kids are doing. Js
This is as bad as some prankster calling MAYDAY on marine band Channel 16.
The Coast Guard is mandated, by law, to respond.
Many thousdands of dollars are wasted with manpower, aircraft and ships deployed!
Worst part, these resources are NOT available for a real emergency!
He showed the face of a boy who did the same thing. Sounds like some privilege
Individuals, regardless of age, responsible for bogus emergency calls should have to reimburse agencies costs – salaries, vehicle costs, 911 costs, etc.
8:18 The guy said if someone prank called 100 times, they could call the 101st time and the wolf shows up and they don't believe them. Doesn't 911 legally have to dispatch emergency personnel and they legally have to respond even if they're 99% sure it's a prank?
Simply charge the parents for all the expenses the fake calls caused the town. Send the offenders to Juvenile detention centers, even for a month depending on how many calls they made. Put their pictures on the internet.
Driver 60 miles out into the wilderness and let her walk home
She won't learn anything from this, they took her down to the station and let out the next morning from there the parents took her to Chuck E. Cheese for lunch 🍕
cops were serious about this crime so please child dont do it again.
I’m tired of today’s parents acting like consequences equals trauma. This is the result of that type of parenting.
thats a p o sh with a weak dad
Don’t let KIDS have PHONES!! WTF is wrong with parents nowadays?! Give em a flip phone only for emergencies!
NO. This wasn’t “silly” . This was PLOTTED . She had Mile markers and a whole story set up.
This isn’t prank phone calling dominos.
stop giving kids phones
Parents sound as "smart" as she is
I can't believe the parents didn't restrict her Internet use after all this. But, that alone, explains a lot. Hope parents are ordered to reimburse LE agencies.
They teach them young in Florida.
how do u txt 911 ??
One time I called 911 for no reason during school i no was in 1st grade. Then they said hello 911 what's you're emergency ? the teacher looked at me and sad what are you doing? I lied that It called
Send the parents the bill. They gave her the phone.
The worst part for me is when parents think the internet and phones etc. are great babysitters
Even my 5 year old self had better sense than to pull something like this!
Wonder if the parents' house insurance (liability insurance extension) would cover the loss? (Sort of like the cops' QI (qualified immunity) insurance, where punitive liability is passed to taxpayers, and eliminating any meaningful impact to the injurious party.)
Solution needed to best verify legitimacy of 911 calls (telecommunication company maybe provide texter's ID?)
An 11 year old child misused this platform, but the fact that there are no safeguards in place to prevent such abuse (and to protect her and her family from the ensuing devastation) warrants shared responsibility, in my humble (and unpopular, I'm sure) opinion.
Hopefully some community hours in some sort of 911 education will educate the child to understand gravity of her error, without ruining her future and allowing the transgression to define her.
