Blows my mind the resilience of kids. I'm always amazed when I see these stories where the children survived and talking about it as adults. I know most don't. And I know there are countless drug addicts and suicides among abused kids. But those like Katie. Woah.

Our justice system is absolutely horrible. Shame in us. This is America and this guy never got life in prison. He had done something like this 15 years prior!! Yet he got out and did the same thing to this poor young girl. So sad.

I had just turned 9 years old when this happened, and I lived two towns over from where this occurred. It was all over the newspapers, and I remember being haunted by her picture and feeling so scared for her. In February/March 1993, my parents and I were coming back from getting some new glasses, and they decided to drive by the crime scene. As an extremely sensitive child I remember crying quietly to myself in the back seat and feeling fearful, not knowing if she was still down there. I was too young to conceptualize that Katie had been found and was no longer trapped. It left a very big impression on me and I’ll always remember this case and the feelings I had during that time. I’m so happy she was found but so terribly sorry she was abducted and abused by this monster. It could have been me. It could have been any other little girl on Long Island at the time. But criminals like this always look for the easiest, less risky targets. That’s how their sick minds work.
