In this episode of Crime Watch Daily Updates: Jane Bashara made a name for herself as a marketing executive. Her husband, Bob, appeared buttoned-up on the outside, but after hours, he traded Chinos for chains as he pursued BDSM sex. He even gained the nickname “Master Bob” and had his own sex dungeon in the basement of a property he owned nearby.
Jane was last seen alive January 24, 2012. Her body was found the next day in the trunk of her SUV, which had been parked in an alley. The autopsy determined she had been beaten and strangled to death.
Days after her death, a handyman named Joseph Gentz went to the police and confessed to killing Jane. He claimed Bob held a gun to his head and made him kill Jane after he started feeling apprehensive about it. Since Joseph admitted to the crime, Bob felt like his handyman needed to be taken out, too. He tried hiring someone else to kill Joseph, but it turns out that guy was wearing a wire.
Bob’s tangled web of secrets was about to come crashing down.
He was arrested June 26, 2012, for solicitation of murder. He pleaded guilty in October 2012.
In May 2013, while he was already in prison, Bob was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, and other crimes. Prosecutors argued he killed Jane because he wanted to live his BDSM lifestyle without his wife in the way.
He went to trial in October 2014 and was convicted December 18, 2014, of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and more. He was sentenced to life in prison.
In 2016, Joseph claimed he acted alone, and Bob had nothing to do with Jane’s murder. The testimony didn’t seem to help Bob’s attempt at a new trial.
Bob appealed his conviction, but the appeals court upheld the ruling, as did the Michigan Supreme Court.
Bob died in August 2020 at the age of 62. His cause of death was not revealed.
Let’s take a look back at the case of a self-made woman whose sex-obsessed husband had her killed, shattering the image of tranquility in a peaceful neighborhood.
