Jennifer Crumbley and her husband James are being tried separately in Michigan after their teenage son opened fire inside a high school in 2021, killing four students. The prosecution called out Jennifer Crumbley’s defense attorney, Shannon Smith, for her reaction to a video of the shooting played in court. Smith insisted her reaction was reasonable and restrained. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber breaks down the most heart wrenching moments from the first day of testimony.

50 thoughts on “‘I Wasn’t Sobbing’: Emotions Run High in Trial of School Shooter’s Mom”
  1. i don’t care what kind of hate i get for this comment, but in a way i feel bad for Ethan because he was showing obvious signs and red flags that he needed help yet his parents didn’t even care and laughed it off. Other than that i have zero empathy for Ethan. RIP to those 4 victims, and prayers for the victims/survivors. 💕🙏

  2. I assume that the defense attorney wasn’t being literal when she used her car trip as an excuse to being up the Taylor Swift song, but given her performance later in the trial (along with her delivery here), it just gives the impression that she didn’t have anything prepared. 😂 8:56

    Either way, it’s badly worded

  3. his message is for deffense attorney Mrs. Shannon Smith, who apparently doesn't know what the definition of a band-aid and parents is!
Taking an example of a Taylor Swift song to open a plea, while young people lost their lives in an act of terrorism, shows the non-professionalism non-maturism and the inhumanity of this attorney!

Parents are not a BAND-AID that stops bullet holes. They are HUMAIN BEING PERSONNALLY RESPONSIBLE for ensuring that no bullet holes are created.

    BAND-AID is a MEDICAL TERM.

Parents are the people from whom a child is directly biologically descended. They are people who are LEGALLY ASSIGNED assigned to a child at birth and who take care of it in the long term.

  4. Lawyer :
    Opening statement :
    “This ain’t for the best
My reputation’s never been worse so
You must like me for me “

  5. Not that I think this mother is innocent by ANY means, however I don't think its fair that this is the representation she has. That attorney is atrocious, and causing her client harm. Why is this judge allowing it?

  6. This is pure negligence. Kids aren’t just “born” like that, there’s a reason why this kid developed this behavior and it’s most probably from his home environment. A proof of that would be that the parents were aware of all the “red flags” before the shooting, his deteriorated mental health, dark thoughts, desires to kill, etc. and instead of supporting him and giving him the psychological assistance he needed, they decided to give him a gun.
It’s really hard for me to believe there’s people on the comments who are more worried about their own interests than the real issue here. Hopefully nothing happens to your kids.

  7. I don’t believe it’s right to charge a parent for the crimes of the child. Perhaps an excellent case for negligence, but NOT manslaughter. This is ridiculous.

  8. Her son is gone for life and it’s her fault. Not to mention she’s responsible for all those deaths, yet she can’t still play the victim. Amazing

  9. This reminds me of the Columbine shooters’ parents. Upon looking at all the warning signs (run-ins with police, threats of violence, caught setting bombs, community members reporting threats of violence) the parents were so thick with denial that they made similar comments to this case. (There was NO WARNING. We were all completely blindsided)

While this couple does display negligence, I think there is a psychological factor involved between mentally ill children and parents. This is a more complicated issue than just “bad parents”. It’s a social issue.

  10. The kid texted the friend saying many things but never anything to prove he actually asks for helped , the kid has been acting like this since he moved in he said the house is haunted, To Bypass this whole thing he was not diagnosed with any mental health issue while in jail he was seen by many types of psychiatrist and psychologist and they clearly testified that he had no mental issues, the parents were not given any hints that he planned to shoot the school , only person knew this was the friend , the friend never went to an adult to tell them this is what the kid texted him almost like he and the friend are the ones that made this plan, the parents have previously had owned 2 guns that stay stored inside the safe he never attempted to mess with them guns so this gun was not the issue the issue was his text messages clearly read “I want to be remembered” as good or bad as parents are or aren’t that’s no reason that a parent has to be charged for the stupidity of the kid , parents sacrifice their life daily for their children rather or not anyone knows it or sees it nobody knows what happens inside op peoples home , the prosecutor brang on these charges for her personal population and to become judge, there is nobody In This world that would want to give up their life and sacrifice everything they have for their kids , when a kid screws up why does parents have to blame them, but nobody will applaud their success when the kid did good. They would not be able to know what was going to happen , the school never notified her on multiple occasions had they of maybe it would have been handled sooner.

  11. Hopefully this will convince people to not bring guns into the house of a known mentally unstable individual. It’s INSANE that Rethuglicans will just let this happen and not demand thorough background checks

  12. This commentator is way over the top on constant comments. Tell him to STFU. I don't need his constant babble.

  13. this parent knew he had mental problems, he had begged them for help and was ignored. One reason he was ignored was possibly due to the fact that Jennifer was too freakin cheap to put the kid on her health insurance, so she obviously didn't want to pay medical bills for him. That would take money away from her horses, from her drinking and from her affairs. She is revolting.

  14. I believe the school should had called police or took in hand of that situation as well, that's what's wrong school failed as well

  15. Oh Jessie, you left out the bit where Smith turns her back on the judge and flips the bird to the court. Super classy. Super professional. Shannon Smith at her usual best.

  16. If the parents are to blame, then the kid needs to be tried as a minor. If they are trying him as an adult, then he is responsible for his own actions. They are trying to have it both ways.

  17. Could you imagine if parents were held accountable for what psychopathic children do??? The rule of law would be broken, what happened to only charging perpetrators

  18. I want so badly to watch this but I cannot bear listening to the defense attorney. This is so sad as she’s not knowledgeable enough in her career.

  19. Jennifer is most definitely responsible for wilful disregard in regards to the deaths and injuries of these individuals. She disregarded her son's audio and visual hallucinations, constant written and asked requests to be seen by a doctor for help-he was told to "not get caught next time"; and "suck it up" by the Dad. 😢
So…they pacify him and by him a automated 9mm gun 🔫 😡. Both parents need jail ❤🏛⚖️✔️

  20. As a mother, I DO NOT agree with what Ethan Crumbley did and in no way am I saying he doesn't deserve what he got as punishment, but my heart breaks knowing he had no true support from parents. And knowing they bought him the gun!? That makes it even worse. My heart breaks for all the children he killed, their families, their friends… And my heart breaks knowing that it could have maybe been prevented if he had parents who responded to all the signs and signals and red flags being shown. Those parents are just as guilty as he is for causing this situation.

  21. I wish I had faith in reporters, police, investigators, judges, & my fellow Americans to give us a straight story. I don't believe a single thing the media trots out anymore since 911.
