On our first episode of True Crime Daily Sidebar, host Joshua Ritter is diving into the #FreeBritney movement and unraveling the tangled conservatorship that the singer is in the middle of fighting. How did the conservatorship start? Why has her father had control over his adult daughter’s life for the past 13 years?

Joining Ritter is psychiatrist and former director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services Dr. Charles Sophy, who at one point was asked to step into the case, but was prohibited from doing so due to the rules of the conservatorship.

  1. Excuse me doctor, But “independent” guardians have huge problems in many areas too. I just wrote a note about it a few minutes ago. Watch the Amazon prime documentary called “the guardians”. It’s horrible in the State of Nevada. I think there’s another documentary to but I’m not sure where that was.

  2. The more you talk the more I believe that maybe Britney Spears DOES need a conservator/guardian. I’m saying that tongue-in-cheek, because she doesn’t actually need it, but her ignorance on certain situations makes me question her intelligence. I don’t know how someone wouldn’t understand they have the right to petition the court to remove the guardianship over them. Her dad wasn’t controlling all her money, so she could’ve siphoned enough money off to go hire a lawyer of her own choosing for a consultation. And if she wants her IUD removed, just go setup a doctor’s appointment with a new doctor. The new doctor would not know she’s under a guardianship so they would presume she is competent and take it out for her. Of course that might’ve caused her problems with her dad, but then it would be too late. I guess unless he’s going to force her to get an abortion.

Edit 2/20/22: added the word “not” into a sentence about a doctor not knowing that she was under conservatorship if she went in to get her IUD removed. I accidentally left it out.

  3. 📺📺 Watch the movie “I Care A Lot” on Netflix and the documentary “The Guardians” on Amazon Prime. The documentary is focused on The guardian conservator ship court system in Nevada (and I guess Britney Spears lived in Las Vegas so I don’t know if that is where her guardianship court was handled or not). The Nevada state guardianship courts are corrupt. I’m not talking about then making mistakes or having a conflict of interest, I’m talking about a huge conflict of interest that is a kin to absolute corruption. It is damn scary.

  4. Welcome to the True Crime family Josh! I liked you as a guest & l also enjoyed this 1st episode of your own!👍 I have enjoyed listening to Dr.Sophy's 'words of wisdom' over the years on "Dr.Phil". I have found him to present as non-judmental & truly caring of people's feelings. Not all doctors are like that, so l respect that.
Look forward to your episode #2!👍 Best of luck 🍀! 💐🐾🌈🇨🇦

  5. I think she is definitely bipolar and probably using some illegal drugs. I fear if she was given complete control of her finances…she would be broke in a few years. Giving up 2% is better than 100.

  6. I knew going in that watching this was going to nauseate me. But now that I have watched it I think it's going to take me a while to get my appetite back.

  7. In Florida, an "allegedly" abusive professional guardian has caused more oversight. Not enough oversight, but some. This woman "allegedly" put all or most of her wards on DNRs and proceeded to drain their estates. Some wards she managed to rip away from family and/or friends who were truly caring for them. At least 2 died because of DNRs that they and their families did not want. One person who didn't need a guardianship in the first place managed with the help of a pro bono attorney to get out of the assisted living home and out from under the guardianship. Another guy who didn't need guardianship is essentially homeless because his life savings was drained. There are many more who fall under the radar and don't make the news. I hope Britney Spears' situation brings attention and oversight to this devastation that conservatorship/guardianship can be. It's a great system when it works but it needs way more oversight. And charges with prison time for the crimes that are committed.

  8. When an unemployed father who is a drug user and bum is told the marriage is over. And he’s threatening to drug test your hair so he can get full custody of the kids so he can get his payday that needs to be considered. When you threaten a mothers relationship with her child it will make a woman get aggressive just like it would a bear.
It’s instinct and the fact that her family instead of coming to her aid instead use this vulnerability to take control of her money. Her father was a bum too so the two bums colluded to get control of her money that’s all this was Attorneys need to stop acting like any of this was legitimate it’s bull crap. The fact that men took control of her money and her life even her fertility is absolutely appalling and this kind of conservatorship was absolutely corrupt in this case and for any attorney to come on and pretend like it’s all legitimate to perhaps protect their business makes them no better. What was done to this girl was an absolute crime and I want to hear more about that. What charges should Jamie face. The courts need to stop dragging their feet to change when circumstances change

  9. this was so imformative. i love it! Ive watched and listened to a lot of media about this case and felt like i learned a lot of new imformation on this.

  10. The conservatorship was never about keeping her safe! It’s about controlling a multi-million dollar pop star who was in the midst of a nervous breakdown and “ruining” her image! Read the NY Times article written by Ronan Farrow! It simply says that her father was essentially jealous that Britney was the breadwinner, and the family did not need him around anymore, Britney kept him away and refused to help him financially after he filed for bankruptcy twice and was in and out of Rehab himself! He took control when she was down and then coerced her into it by using her children to make her agree to the arrangement. Even then, she agreed to it but requested her father NOT be the conservator! And when he got into the role, he kept anyone who would defend her at bay or fired them, brought in a team of people who treated her like a child, ratting her out if she didnt comply! If he cared about her, instead of pushing on her stage six months after the court made him conservator, why not take her back to Louisiana and rest for a few years? Why not prepare her to be able to get back in a good place? Its about money plain and simple. He has abused her estate( In 2013, her net worth was estimated at $200 Mil, today its at $50 Mil) Controlled her love life, her children (there is a restraining order against him ever contacting or being around the children) and Isolated her from anyone who could remind her that she could petition to end it. Greed plain and simple, everyone! People with mental issues or illnesses can live productive lives. To judge her off her social media is wrong! I mean, social media is full of crazy people that have the right to hold their own wallet! Britney is human and has a right to basic human rights! If she can record four albums, Three tours, a Four year Vegas residency and multiple television appearances, interviews and promote perfume/lingerie lines, is she really that incompetent?

  11. Interesting topic, but as soon as I heard LA DCFS I was done. That office's negligence has allowed for so many preventable deaths over the years (Gabriel Fernandez, Anthony Avalos, Noah Cuatro are just some of the infamous child abuse cases). Get your s**t together LA.

  12. Conservatorships are about money. If they were about care and concern, helping people that are having a hard time taking care of themselves or may cause harm, the homeless population would be greatly reduced because they would be cared for. Many many people are homeless because they have mental health issues that cause them to make poor decisions or be taken advantage of and no one is jumping up and down to take care of them

  13. The only Danger in Britney’s life was Jamie Spears by kidnapping her making all these allegations of mental health breakdown he was the danger in Britney’s life …,Jamie even prevented her from seeing her own children Sham …He Should be put in psychiatric ward

  14. Such a fascinating and heartbreaking case 🙁 Interesting to hear more about the legal side of things here. Looking forward to future episodes with Josh!

  15. I don't understand. I'm a little upset that even this doctor DOESN'T GET IT! The 5150 was something HER DAD DID. Her shaving hee head HER DAMN CHOICE. Her taking an umbrella to a pop's window BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT LEAVE HER ALONE AND HAD BEEN TAKING PICTURES UP HER SKIRT…… BRITNEY WAS NEVER CRAZY! She absolutely NEVER should have been placed in a this! EVER! Her dad even got the judge to AGREE with not notifying Britney when her father first filed!!! Unbelievable!

  16. A lot of these things boil down to complex trauma caused by the people that the person is dealing with on a regular basis. There’s no chemical imbalance. Britney is surrounded by narcissists and these people can and will drive anyone to act “crazy “. Get rid of them and she’ll be fine.

  17. Britney is just fine, in fact amazing, it’s her family that needs to be checked for one disorder: Narcissism. Hope, she will get through this and come out stronger! 💗
