Kentucky law enforcement says Christopher Elder, 46, opened fire on his ex-girlfriend and her family outside the courthouse in Elizabethtown this week. Erica Riley, 37, and her mother, Janet Riley, 71, were killed in front of Erica’s children. Elder later took his own life after a police chase and standoff. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber sat down with criminal defense attorney Anthony Osso to discuss the case.

  1. Its unfortunate they give these orders out to women like candy. Men are always presumed guilty before being proven innocent. Maybe the Hro would force him out of his home based on lies?! He snapped! He was the wrong one to be played with.

  2. I think the preservation of individual rights favors the criminals. That does not preclude preservation of the victim’s rights to safety.
Even failure to prosecute or charge suspects or alleged perpetrators does not preclude the rights of the victims. Abusers do not have the right to harass. Abusers talk about it being a free country and they have rights to go where they want, which is true, but not to stalk. Why would they need to be where their victims are? Why would they defend their rights to be near their victim(s) if not to harass and intimidate?

The point is, yes, you have a right to be anywhere but if you see the victim, YOU (abuser/stalker) have the duty to retreat. Victims will retreat when possible (sometimes others are involved in outings where victims cannot leave).

We don’t have to prosecute but the LEOs have a duty to protect. Safety is a BASIC right and when someone threatens the safety of another, they have to go. It doesn’t matter about the abuser’s right to “be there”… their presence violates the safety of one or more, they should go. Those who won’t go… they are there to threaten and intimidate which is against the law

  3. Long time fan of your channel and Elizabethtown resident! I always wanted to see more videos like these closer to me but I guess I didn't realize that'd mean someone getting hurt. This was a tragedy!! tyty for the videos!

  4. There was a PREGNANT Filipino wife that was gunned down INSIDE the courthouse in the Seattle many years ago. She was there seeking a protection order and or to deal with her ongoing divorce case. She was following all the rules for dealing with problems—but some men can’t follow the rules. I think there should be surprise interventions whenever dealing with break-ups, divorce, or even just confronting abusive behavior. Invite his healthy family members, her family, maybe his best friends, a mediator and therapist and his Dr. it seems over the top, but if confronted IN THE MOMENT, IN A CONTROLLED area, maybe the men could actually get help.

  5. As a DV survivor, the threat is always there. When it happens in front of your kids, it changes them. They think that this is the normal way of life. I'm not amazed at the brazen actions he took. From experience, there are too many who use alcohol to make them ten feet tall and bulletproof. The mental control they have over you makes you doubt your own common sense. These are always difficult situations. Protecting your children is the top priority. My heart goes out to these children. Whoever takes over their care, please make sure they get help.
