A Minnesota jury found Michael Carpenter, 38, guilty of shooting his co-worker, Nicole Hammond, killing her in the parking lot of the building where they worked. Text messages between the two show that Hammond wanted Carpenter to leave her alone. Law&Crimeā€™s Jesse Weber has insight from Dan Murphy, co-author of the book “Workplace Safety: Establishing an Effective Violence Prevention Program.”

  1. I feel sorry for any female victims this Dan Murphy pos came accross during his time with the NYPD. Being cordial with a coworker after telling them you donā€™t want to date them should not ever be a reason they were killed. Men are turned down everyday and if they donā€™t understand that no means no and are violent enough to kill after being rejected maybe we should be more focused on teaching men that they donā€™t have the right to take a life bc they are being rejected. Honestly there is nothing this woman couldā€™ve done to keep this man from hurting her bc he is clearly not emotional or mentally well. What he did was not normal and was not caused bc she continued to communicate with him.

  2. This hit close to home for me. Two years ago, the building I work at hired a new security guard. He was nice and very friendly. He would say hello and I would wave. Soon he would try to converse with me more and more. I like to keep my distant and keep my life private. He tried to ask me out on a date, and I would say no –nicely. Soon he started to stalk me. I would see him in the lunch room, break room, and close to the restroom. I stopped leaving my office suite because of this guy. I would sneak to the back of the building to leave to my car because he would wait at the front lobby to see me. One day he caught me going to the restroom. Asked me which office suite I was in because he went to each offices on the second floor and didn't see me. THAT SCARED TF OUTTA ME! I am not on the second floor. I reported it to my bosses and the building security team did look into it. This man searched my name on the security badging system… They ended up moving him to a different facility. NEVER AGAIN! I keep to myself even more now.

  3. This guy is focusing too much on what SHE did. She was trying to be nice and polite, not doubt, because she had to see him at work every day and there is no proof she would have been safe had she ignored and blocked him.

  4. OMGā€¦my aunt lives a couple blocks from that textile company, and I remember seeing wreaths in the parking lot last time I visited her and Saint Ckoud a couple years ago. I never saw this on the news. Often times it doesnā€™t even get to the cities so thank you for taking it further.

  5. Canā€™t even go to WORK without some creep feeling entitled to you and your time and space and LIFE! Disgusting. she was dealing w a scary man who would not leave her alone and thatā€™s hard enough to navigate as is but to have the added pressure that itā€™s a colleague in ur same building? Just heartbreaking the anxiety and fear she had all to come to her being murdered by him. Rejection isnā€™t the end of the world Iā€™m so SICK of hearing about people dying because someone couldnā€™t accept that not everyone they want is going to be interested in them.

  6. Sad situation PD shouldā€™ve prevented this incident. I donā€™t understand I duck and dodge female co-workers like the plague. I donā€™t even say hi/bye to them šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚
