If family members start showing up to the police station even a few hours after their loved one goes missing, the report should be taken seriously. Period. Especially when the family know their disappearance is out of character. The waiting 24hrs before filing a report is a myth – well it is here in Australia. It's a good thing they listened to the victim's sister as it's time lost when they don't.

good on the jackson PD, what a good job jumping on this from the get go… i understand police resources can be limited and will be stretched if they respond to every suspension of a crime…but also I don't like this blanket rule of waiting 24 hours or 72 hours because those can be the critical hours… it should be treated on a case by case basis and if the situation seems suspicious jump on it immediately…so props to them for taking this on from the first hour
