This is called 'war-hero psychosis'. In the military world the highest 'sacrifice' while still being alive is the purple-heart. It means you got injured, and survived, and are now 'god'. It goes to their head. Not all, but many. They are showered with so much hero-accolades that it seriously goes to their heads. What results is an individual who thinks he is 'special' and can 'get away with things'. Again, not all, but some. But it's real.
