Teacher convicted of kidnapping teen for sex – Everything Law and Order Blog

In this episode of Crime Watch Daily Updates: Elizabeth “Beth” Thomas’ family came face to face with any parents’ worst nightmare: their teen daughter went missing. The same day, 50-year-old Tad Cummins wrote a note to his wife saying he was leaving to “clear his head” for a few days and not to call the police. She waited until the next day and learned Tad withdrew thousands from their bank account.

Investigators learned Beth and Tad were at a Motel 8 in Oklahoma City two days after they disappeared and had gone shopping at a local Walmart. While there, Cummins bought chocolate, cheese, lube, and other items.

On April 20, 2017, over a month after they left Tennessee, investigators located Beth and Tad at a commune in Cecilville, California, which is a small town not far from the Oregon border. He was arrested and charged with transporting a minor across state lines for the purpose of engaging in criminal sexual conduct and obstruction of justice.

He pleaded guilty in April 2018 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

At his sentencing, a prosecutor read Beth’s victim impact statement, which said, “What you did to me was unspeakable. You saw a broken girl, who was lonely, scared and traumatized. You made her feel safe and loved because you saw what she needed and made her believe you would be her protector. All you were was a man who just wanted sex, and you used me and manipulated me. Tad Cummins is a sick, disgusting criminal.”

In July 2020, Cummins filed for compassionate release from prison because of his co-morbidity factors if he contracts COVID-19. A federal judge, however, overruled his appeal.

Now, let’s take a look back at the case of a teacher who took advantage of a student and is now paying the price.

  1. Used? She willingly went with him and willingly engaged in that behavior. If they lock 15year olds up for crines, they can obviously make right and wrong decisions. She just gets to hide behind her age

  2. She isn't exactly a victim, she made her own choices in this situation.

No, I am not defending the pedophile teacher in any way at all. Just saying she had a part in everything as well, so she is definitely not some innocent person.

  3. Let's be real here, he is certainly a groomer and "lowlife" but calling him a kidnapper isn't really fair. it's not like he broke into her house and took her in the middle of the night, she willingly left to go on vacation with kris kringle himself…

  4. If the school administration had informed the parents of the kissing incident, and charged him then, this prob wouldn’t have happened. Every system in place waits until it’s just about too late to step in.

  5. She was dumb to go with him but that's the whole point. Teenage girls are dumb and he is a grown man who took advantage of her. 20 years is to light a sentence .

  6. These type of things don’t happen to Mexicans our parents are too strict and nosey this only happens to white girls whose parents won’t discipline them or monitor their tech and attitude 🙄🙄🙄 watch your kids! Go through their phones and invade their privacy you can prevent or stop things like this from happening 🙄

  7. Good for the judge had no sympathy for that scumbag he deserves everything he gets oh poor baby what's the matter you can't do the time shouldn't have did the crime Tad man if a judge would have been crazy enough to let him out he would have tried to go kill that young girl and her family keep him locked up forever so he can never reoffend again

  8. Hearing her victim impact statement shows that she has a real understanding of what happened to her. May she continue to heal from what this predator did.

All the negative comments victim blaming a CHILD is whats wrong with our society and to top it all off the damn school system wouldn't even fire him on the spot….ridiculous.
Lets pray the justice system doesn't fail her too!

  9. I like when people say of criminals, "this is not who you are." Sadly, that is EXACTLY who they are, they just kept it hidden from others. He's where he belongs and 20 years isn't enough.

  10. Ya know…I realize he,s a disgusting pervert…but…unless that TEENAGER rode the short yellow bus to school, she should have known better! She was DEFINITELY old enough to know right from wrong!
