Teen Girl Killed By Boat While Wakeboarding: The Story So Far – Everything Law and Order Blog

Ella Adler, 15, was wakeboarding on May 11 with a friend when they fell from the boat towing them in Key Biscayne, Florida. Wildlife officers say while Ella was waiting for the boat to pick her up, another boat hit her and failed to stop. Law enforcement launched a massive search for the boat. Ella was a beloved student and member of the Miami Ballet. Law&Crime’s Angenette Levy looks at the questions that remain about the crash and what charges could be filed with maritime attorney Mike Winkleman in this episode of Crime Fix — a daily show covering the biggest stories in crime.

  1. The person who is going to end up liable is the one driving the boat she was in, it was negligence. Realistically be liable for third-degree murder or manslaughter. It was just negligence to leave a person in the middle of a waterway with no safety or warning to others. It was literally a setup for other drivers to run over her. Is literally leaving a toddler in the middle of a highway at night and blame the car that hit it.

  2. The driver of the boat who struck her is NOT guilty… you wouldn’t even see someone bobbing in the water . The ski boat shouldn’t have been in an area that was busy.

  3. How many drunk 78 year olds has this attorney seen involved in this type of incident. Seems pretty sure of his theory. What a tragedy 😢

  4. At 78 years old he should not have his license let alone be able to drive a boat. I know there's going to be a lot of people with opinions against this but myself I have a 75 year old mother-in-law and she does not drive anymore because of her age she knows it's a danger to other people

  5. This is simply horrific, my heart goes out to her family and friends. There is no excuse for peoples stupidity,

    RIP Young Lady,

  6. Did the boat she was skiing behind, use their flag, warning there was a skier down? This is proper procedure for skiing on most lakes.

  7. Very tragic accident so sad prayers for the young girls parents, I used to have a like a 19 foot Boat and I heard this was a yacht that hit her and I respectfully disagree with the lawyer with the sun glare on the water being in that big of a water craft it is possible to not see a child's head bobbing in choppy water . I used to pull skiers on my little 19 foot boat and soon as they hit the water I would turn back very quickly and head straight to my skier in the lake because it was a lot of boats on the lake I was on and I always feared this happening but I made sure to turn the boat back and go straight towards my skier in the lake because I was sure that oncoming water craft could see my Boat better than they could see a skier' head bobbing in choppy water… Again so sad prayers for all..

  8. He's 78 yrs old maybe he had auto pilot on. I don't think he was drinking I think he may have less than perfect vision and didn't realize he hit her that's why he kept going. I would need a little more info to say he hit and ran.

  9. if anyone has ever been on a large center console at lower speeds its actually very difficult to see someone bobbing in the water

  10. For how little of information they are giving us and claim to know… HOW in the world is a news channel gunna sit here and just let these 2 speculate and give their opinions and talk this much just assuming and guessing what they “think might have happened” how is that reporting??? This is just garbage and disrespectful to all involved…..

    RIP to the girl.

  11. Unless you own and have driven a boat like this, you should have no opinion. Would be very easy to not see her in the water, esp if he’s used to crab pots everywhere. Tragic for sure

  12. Made multiple claims of operator negligence without knowing any actual facts of the case. With the boat bounching off waves, it's highly likely he didn't even feel it. Was she weaving a life vest? Was the water choppy? Both girls fell. Which one did they circle back to first? A lot of assumptions here. Not one of your better videos.

  13. I believe there was negligence on both sides of this tragedy. This wasn’t a murder, it was a tragedy.
To choose that area for wakeboarding or waterskiing during a weekend is not sensible. We see reckless behavior of swimmers, jet skiers and boaters every weekend. That Saturday it was crowded. The music coming from the boats was vey loud. It’s noisy out there. There had been previous accidents in the same area. People want to hang the boater already.
I understand the pain of the loss of such a lovely, talented girl, but vengeance is not the way. If there was negligence it was not only the boater’s

  14. The older gentleman likely never knew he hit anything. She was bobbing in the water. And probably look like a coconut floating. His boat is huge. And he cannot see that kind of detail in the water. The boat towing the girl was not a ski boat. it was a large boat unable to take quick action to pick up anybody’s skiing off the back. Furthermore, we were skiing in a well-known documented waterway, where Boats commonly passed through on the way to the open water and back. Essentially a highway for Boats. Not a place to play rounded.the boat towing, the girl should be held liable. For putting children in such a dangerous situation.
