His defense team has nothing. That opening statement was the bare minimum that could have been said. It's not surprising considering the amount of evidence. The fact he attempted to kill a police canine sealed his fate with the jury before prosecution even brought their first witness.

I am so glad Riggs survived, it's utterly amazing that he did survive, hats off to all the officers involved in bringing this bugger to justice xx
