The family of Maya Kowalski, the subject of Netflix’s “Take Care of Maya,” allege that a report of child abuse from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life. The Kowalski’s are suing doctors, the Department of Children and Families, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for $200 million dollars in connection to Beata’s death. According to court documents, the child abuse case against Beata was pushed forward after Maya’s physician confirmed her condition, complex regional pain syndrome, was not the fault of her parents. During the time Beata was separated from Maya, she took her own life.

47 thoughts on “WATCH LIVE: ‘Take Care of Maya’ Trial — Kowalski v Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital — Day 19”
  1. The whole staff comes off as covering their behinds. None of this tracks with the testimony or demenour of anyone else outside of JHACH as it relates to this family. Clearly they didn't like Beata and in protecting each other and covering up their mistakes with Maya took a mother away from her very sick child. JH deserves every book thrown at them and then some.

  2. No matter what, the hospital and defences witnesses are generally really dislikable, unpleasant, aggressive and arrogant, without any grain of empathy. How is it possible that ALL these medical representatives still work at the hospital?

  3. I’m from Sydney and have a science background. Any time I took any of my 4 children to the ER for one thing or another I had to pretend to not know anything medical related because as soon as any medical staff fought a whiff, they would get their backs up and need to prove something. Unbelievable!!! And they made LOTS of errors, omissions and blunders. Thankfully none so serious to cost a life, in my personal experience, so I get the frustrations of Beata to have to deal with both the attitude and having a sick child at the same time.

  4. It's funny how Maya isn't present for these witnesses and their powerful testimonies. And Jack sure was looking nervous at the point of Maya's life is a lie statement

  5. I am very surprised the family actually won on this. The defense put together a solid case, and the plaintiffs attorney was so unorganized, unprofessional and unethical. Both sides have made enough moves for a motion for appeal. I can't imagine the family actually getting this money

  6. The hospital is so incompetent that Nurse Klink called it COPS, they still to this very date don't know about the disease and probably how to treat it, this is bound to happen again, absolutely disgusting!!! And she isn't the only one who doesn't recall or can't properly identify the disease. This should speak volumes, especially since the diagnosis of CRPS was on so many documents, and being billed for as well.

  7. I was taught in my nursing degree that if you are writing what the patient stated, you write EXACTLY what they said, otherwise DO NOT quote. So this is another instance of poor charting on SEVERAL providers' parts, or it's exaggerated BS. not one person who's testified to the cursing/swearing / etc seems to have properly documented the outlandish and "offensive" behavior.

  8. I hope this teaches people to stop trusting doctors and nurses. These hags calling themselves “doctors” is proof evil comes in all professions.

  9. At first I thought Teppa seemed the most normal (not saying a lot) but as I’m rewatching she comes across as a know it all, fake b**ch, “that is offensive to me” ….when a child in excruciating pain calls me a name bc I don’t believe her. IF Maya ever actually did swear. She could have noted “patient is swearing/cursing” at least then you’d have something to go off and you wouldn’t have to write the oh so offensive words. GROSS

  10. Rewatching the defense present their case in light of the new motion, and this so-called doctor Teppa-Sanchez is absolutely horrible!! She won’t say Beata’s name, just kept calling her “the mother”, which is disrespectful!
Funny how she can’t look at Maya or anyone at the plaintiff table! I don’t know how she or ANY of the medical “professionals” sleep at night!

  11. So focused on following what defense lawyer told her to say, “I stay in my scope of practice. I follow doctor’s orders”. She was completely disingenuous and inauthentic, a total liar. She mistreated Maya just like the rest of them. Embarrassing as a nurse to hear that.

  12. these nurses, due too their lack of knowledge of CRPS,when they treat the patient, simple slight touch makes the patient scream,or argry, they start to think the patient is strange, the parient has something wrong with their brain.they start to judge.

  13. 8:40 well you piece of garbage, if you didnt object to EVERY SINGLE QUESTION than they would have uses less time dont you think? how about we implement a "chess clock" to it than, everytime there is an objection, the other side gets 10 seconds, this way only yhe plentiff would have extra 4 hours due to the amount of time you spent objecting, i find that fair, dont you?

  14. I don't really buy that either Maya or Beata were just slinging swear words. I do know that I rarely (if ever) swear and I went to a doctor appointment where it hurt so bad, I said the F word several times. I was in severe pain. So is it possible she swore? Absolutely. But why not document it?
This nurse practitioner is a flat out liar. Nurses don't gossip when they're on the same floor? People in the hospital on a completely different floor who weren't even treating her knew her nickname was Ketamine girl and when her mom died so BS!

  15. The mother killing herself has traumatized her family for life. She could ha c e gone to a hotel anywhere but there. How did she think it would affect them

  16. I would tell the dr give me morphine. Oxy and panadol does not work. Of course they gave you such a small dose it does nothing. I always always need higher doses. Soe the nurse cannot speak to Mays needs

  17. Johanna witness has me on the fence. Mayas mother wanting to wake up her daughter who was sleeping why? And Maya changing when her mother came in. Anyone else? Or is it just that mayas mother is sooo protective of her daughter and knows more. Maybe Mayas mum was so stressed and feeling left out thats why she reacted that way? Proponol is a pretty heavy drug

  18. Rewatching the trial… Clearly Klink had no idea how to treat CRPS. So many “I don’t remember” statements, yet she remembers Maya never saying she was in pain. Come on now! You know you lying….

The level of ignorance by the hospital staff is unacceptable.

  19. Mya was ALREADY being treated. She went to the ER because her pain was so bad she had to. She didn’t need them to wean her off anything. That’s for her regular Drs to decide. She needed pain management ASAP PERIOD. So sick of the system these days.

Because of the opioid epidemic it’s harder for ppl who need pain managed to get that help. I’ve encountered it myself.

  20. For Mya to be angry enough to curse just proves they’re not controlling her pain n she’s desperate at that point. And the fact her Mom said “at least if u have a heart attack they will finally treat u” AGAIN PROVES she was uncomfortable. These Women all made snap judgements about her n punished her for it. “She was on her knees n I thought hmm that’s suspicious” SHES NOT PARALYZED

Every symptom is not constant 24/7. Glad these Women are exposed. The fact she keeps bringing up CANCER PATIENTS n the lawyer mentions the pain scale n CRPS is above that was a mic drop moment. Glad the little guys won.

  21. She didn’t say she had an owy? Cause a mature 10 yr old who’s been through numerous tests with different hospitals, doctors n specialists FINALLY knows what’s wrong with her n what helps so she asks for that n is crucified AND PUNISHED for it. BTW My kids also will express themselves more when Mom is there vs when I’m not. Because Mom will speak up for them!

  22. I watched “Dr Michelle Smith” looking smug and shaking her head during closing arguments. How does it feel now, Dr Smith? You were WRONG. You and the other so-called doctors and nurses at the hospital owe this family an apology. Regardless, your hospital has shown what it’s really like! And I’m glad people see that.

  23. My kids hold it together at school, and the minute they get in the car all of their emotions come pouring out. I’m their safe space. That’s the way it should be. I was the same with my parents and still am that way with my husband. Every single nurse or doctor involved in this shouldn’t be in this field any more. Not an ounce of compassion was shown to this poor girl and her family.

  24. Idk, the argument that the kid is asking for sedation doesn't really perturb me, because she has a nurse for a mother, so her mother likely uses medical terms all the time around her and she's a very bright child, so she's likely to use medical terms because she understands them.

  25. It sucks even when something is "in your head", you still FEEL it … Your brain feels the pain. So, pretend it's in her head… Shes still experiencing it, and placebo is powerful.
I still doubt she was faking it.

  26. The hospital Keeps saying they offered counseling and psychological services when the family came in for stomach pain because they did not understand mom and maya’s relationship they labeled them as crazy and made decisions based on their bias assumptions.

  27. Most 10 year olds aren’t going to say I have an ouchie . This once size fits all approach to to nursing is so outdated where do they find these nurses . Painting maya out to be some linda Blair swearing and thrashing on the bed.
