The family of Maya Kowalski, the subject of Netflix’s “Take Care of Maya,” allege that a report of child abuse from Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life. The Kowalski’s are suing doctors, the Department of Children and Families, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for $200 million dollars in connection to Beata’s death. According to court documents, the child abuse case against Beata was pushed forward after Maya’s physician confirmed her condition, complex regional pain syndrome, was not the fault of her parents. During the time Beata was separated from Maya, she took her own life.

  1. I have CRPS and what this family has gone through was absolutely tragic.
As a former nurse and mother I absolutely understand why her mom was direct as to what Maya needed. Dr's gas light people with this disease.
    This was preventable.
This also shines a light on the corrupt CPS system.
    This case was so important.

  2. Since when do they do jury instructions before closing arguments? I've watched a 100 trials and I've never seen that before. They usually give jury instructions right before they deliberate. Is this something new that Florida is doing? They didn't do this with Casey Anthony(I only mention her because of how big her trial was).

  3. I dislike that this issue came up with juror 1. Just because he words things in a certain way doesn't mean he's leaning any direction. What the judge said sounds more accurate. He's former law enforcement. He's trained to "dig".

  4. Judge: there’s a condition that this culture was pervasive.
No kidding! They called a patient Ketamine Girl!!! That represents a culture that disparages patients and speaks to the heart of their culture. No compassion, no empathy, no respect.
I’m sure there were compassionate and kind nurses and doctors but when Maya said that the only nice thing she could think of for the Daisy Award for the nurse was that she came quickly when Maya needed to use the bathroom it speaks to the lack of compassion in this facility.
I don’t believe for one minute that nurses sat and played with her.

  5. Wow! This hospital intentionally withheld information about their standing during the plaintiff’s stay in their facility from the plaintiff and the court after the judge ordered they turn over the information. The judge looks p!ssed.

  6. I spent over 15 years in medical billing and coding and the fact they charged for CRPS and did not treat is in itself, fraud. Patients do not know about coding and it takes a while to get used to it.

  7. Dr Corcoran what a star. Best expert witness (actually best witness period) for the entire trial. He earned whatever fee he charges bc man was he prepared and he comes across as a very pleasant person on the stand. Ironic bc when he testified the first in plaintiffs case he was asked about how often he testifies as an expert and this was his first! Stellar job by Whitney as well who had to fly by the seat of pants with all this last minute evidence to sort thru and present coherently.

  8. Counsel Hunter is being spanked by the Judge. I think JJACH should sue the coumsel for mishandling the case and still collecting hefty fees

  9. So all you sympathizers who railed on my comment, as of today Maya has shed that poor me persona and is now going forth with another lawsuit. 200+mill and still wants more. Professional con job. Wake up!

  10. I am so sorry that John Hopkins think that accreditation has anything to do with the many mistakes & ultimately mistreatment of Maya . The lawyers for John Hopkins are clutching at straws because their own witness were so awful

  11. Mayas mother had munchausen and was poisoning her. I can’t believe the amount of people that believe the one sided documentary. Just wow. Maya is alive today because the hospital stepped in and removed her from her mother. Seriously she would have never stopped until maya was dead.

  12. You pro plaintiff people do understand we, not the hospitals, are the ones funding Maya's new lifestyle, right? Cons like this is why insurance/hospital costs are ridiculously high. They pass that onto the public.

  13. Are you kidding me, nagging about a juror like 5 minutes before closing arguments. Your juror doesn’t like Sally Smith, guess what, neither do I. We have heard all the evidence, now there are just closing arguments, give it a rest lady. Too late to nag now.
