The year 1968 was a time of rebellion across the US and the wider world. Tremendous demonstrations and rebellions shook American cities in opposition to the Vietnam War, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and demands to free Huey Newton, co-founder of the Black Panther Party. Amidst this tumult, two athletes, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, captured the spirit of the times by raising their fists at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics after placing first and third in the 200-meter dash. 45 years later, Dr. John Carlos is still with us—but many of his contemporaries have passed on. Dr. John Carlos joins Edge of Sports for a look back on the lives of Jimmy Hines, Ralph Boston, Herb Douglas, Harry Belafonte, Tina Turner, and Jim Brown.

Elsewhere in this episode of Edge of Sports, Dr. Maria Veri, co-author of Gridiron Gourmet: Gender and Food at the Football Tailgate, joins for a discussion on the gender politics of tailgating culture. Dave Zirin also dives into the recently leaked details of a Professional Golfers’ Association merger with the Saudi Arabian LIV Golf tour.

  1. The English Department at Penn I'm sure has put out press releases again and again that Drumpf never took a class in the English Department LOL when he was in college! Considering these doing violence to grammar screeds that Drumpf puts out on social media!

  2. You are cordially invited to participate in an internet strike/walkout on July 12.

It's aimed primarily at the big three: Bezos, Musk and Zuckerberg.
Tune in, turn off and log out.

  3. If black people acted the same way Asians have the last 20 (you could say 200, from the railroads, Chinese exclusion act, brutal wars, Japanese internment) years, e.g., sacrificing for their families, demanding good grades, paying for college, and basically ignoring the discrimination, would the white mans oppression have had the same detrimental effect?

If one ponders such objectively, the answer seems pretty obvious. And it really should be allowed to be discussed objectively.

When I speak with some of my A.A. friends, I've heard the reply that they don't want to be Asians.

But, what does that kean in the context of actions? Does that mean they don't want to sacrifice? But rather simply blame other people while generally advancing a fun and entertaining but also pretty negative culture? Do a large percentage of them work 2 jobs, stay married, and then save the combined income to pay for their kids college, kids they demand to do good in school?

That is what other asians apparently have done, even while being discriminated against, often not even knowing english well.

Chris is out of touch. Things change.

  4. "Black Love" fist? You mean "Black Power". Why revise history? It's a serious distortion and disservice to those who lived through those times.

  5. Peace and deep respect to Dr Carlos. ♥️✊🏻 US capitalist schools refuse to have excellent body knowledge, safe muscle development skills, and overall health. Kids don't know how to protect knees, back, and rest of body. Girls are pushed down in sports because women who are in sports are way more effective leaders.
