In her documentary “Hard Road of Hope,” independent filmmaker Eleanor Goldfield details the history and contemporary struggles of West Virginians living and dying in coal country. As part of our coverage commemorating the Battle of Blair Mountain centennial, we are screening “Hard Road of Hope” for a limited time on the TRNN YouTube channel (watch it now here). In this complementary interview, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez talks with Goldfield about the urgency of the issues detailed in her documentary, and about how the gas industry, which employs environmentally destructive practices like fracking, is picking up where the coal industry left off and continuing the exploitation of the people and resources of West Virginia. 1. I love it when clueless morons yack about some thing they know nothing about. Fracking is much deeper than the water table. The well casing is cemented in to keep water out of the well and oil out of the water. The Permian is one of the most fracked spots on earth. My tap water is just fine. Natural gas compressors must pass the same emissions, just like your car does.

  2. So you’re saying that if you talk to people with empathy and actually listen, they’ll listen to what you have to say? How the fuck do you expect that to work?

  3. Didn't Lincoln give W Virginia to the coal barons to ensure his coal supply in the Civil War?

  4. It's not just WV Pennsylvania has been destroyed by fracking! I live on the NY border we have a pumping station 200 yards away they use to send NG to NYC from the NG gas they are pulling out of the ground! This is OK on public lands including State Game lands but it's against the law to fly a drone in the PA Grand Canyon??? Is this because they don't want people getting photos of what the Politicians are letting these companies do to our public lands?

  5. Trust me, they like it like this. They are proud of their ignorance and see living poor as a positive character trait. ~60% of West Virginians believe their state is on the right track while the rest of the country is on the wrong one. Deluded. The state just lost over 60,000 people over the last decade, the largest percentage loss of a population out of any state. Their state has been exploited for over a century and they still can’t see it. They ask for it. These are people who fly the traitor rebel flag and talk about their “heritage”, completely ignoring the forces that formed their state, in the first place.

  6. All opposed to extraction of coal, minerals, gas, oil… could stop using cars, trucks, public transportation, private planes electricity, etc. Solar panels and wind farms pollute in manufacture and disposal, using rate earth metals too. There's more.

  7. Just think how much better off we would be if Paula Jean was the senator from West Virginia. Hopefully the people's party and rank choice voting can make that happen.

  8. Let's put solar panels on every home, business and covered parking rooftop and switch to electric vehicles making nearly everything we do solar powered while completely decentralizing our power supply and empowering everyone as power generation owners.

Solar power is CHEAPER and electric vehicles are soon to be CHEAPER to make and already are considerably CHEAPER to maintain and operate, especially if charged from your own solar power.

A 3-5 year ROI (return on investment) for a solar array that will generate power for decades is a no-brainer and the panels can even be made locally too.

  9. Science-denying American Republicans are so certain they're right and the science world is wrong that they're even fighting to deregulate everything to further accelerate our rate of burning fossil fuels and the pillaging of the planet for their own personal greed (fear).

They're willing to bet the world and all of its inhabitants on their certainty (limitless greed). #FearAndGreedRule #EmpathyFreeGOP

Every single American Republican policy puts fear and greed (fear) before people and planet. Fear (and the empathy and critical thought it kills) is what separates the right from the left. The fear at the root of ”Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.” — Albert Einstein

Liberals hate American Republicans because all of their policies put fear and greed (fear) before people and planet (including equality and empathy).

American Republicans hate liberals for the exact same reasons, because they’re afraid we’ll get in the way of their fear and greed.
