Award-winning ‘Nomadland’ documents poverty and survival in America – Everything Law and Order Blog

When capitalism chews us up and spits us out, where do we go? How do we carry on? And can we find ways of living that honor the dignity of our humanity when the world we live in so often does not? In this week’s episode of “The Marc Steiner Show,” Marc and Inequality.org Founder and Director Chuck Collins explore the important message and soulful artistry of Jessica Bruder’s book “Nomadland,” and its new film adaptation, starring Frances McDormand.

  1. Being white doesn't give me any free pass out of economic dispair. The vast majority of those in economic dispair in my town are white working class.

  2. To Mark and Chuck.Yes Chuck as a Canadian as you said it’s all about treating your citizens decently especially seniors. The USA is full of good people like yourselves but idealistic only.Let’s face it your governments policies make or break the situation you face.Until you have a government that represents the people nothing will change. Will it take anarchy, revolution, massive strikes etc I certainly think so because your governments are so corrupt and you only have one party. You have to destroy the MIC and become a decent country not only for your own people but for the world instead of being a colonial , warmongering, evil, racist, corrupt playground for the rich and help all your citizens especially the disadvantaged.

  3. Add dental care to Medicare so people like those in the movie don't have to go to Mexico to get dental care they can afford. Restructure Social Security so it provides at least a minimally livable monthly retirement benefit, an amount someone can actually live on. Raise the income cap on Social Security payroll tax so those who are able to earn higher incomes continue to pay their fair percentage of wages into the Social Security Trust Fund. Raise the minimum wage over a 5 year incremental period, but make it adjusted for different areas where the cost of living index is lower or higher. Lower the age of eligibility for Medicare gradually until everyone is eligible regardless of age. Provide places where van/RV dwellers can stay that are close to civilization rather than out there in the BLM desert where the rules force them to move at least 25 miles every 2 weeks and where they have to do extraordinary things to survive where there is no water, no sewer, no electricity.

  4. I would not use the word “agency“. These people have tenacity to look forward and make choices. Agency refers to an agent. Agent – no gentleman. Great conversation. I look forward to listening to this documentary.

  5. We are on a fixed income like many in our community. Our property taxes just went up 25 to 30 % which is a lot when on a fixed income.

  6. The Children AND Grandchildren of those who spewed lavish praise on, and VOTED FOR, Reagan GET WHAT THEIR PROGENITORS GAVE THEM.
Why waste time in "weak critique" discussions with this book and movie? NOTHING NEW IN AMERICA HERE, 1930s anyone?
**CAPITALISM KILLS EVERYBODY** GOTTA WORK RIGHT NOW TO GET RID OF IT, **ORGANIZE** not COMMUNITIZE. To bring about SOCIALISM IN AMERICA.
AND ALL OF THAT IS NOT THE REAL ESSENCE OF WHAT'S GOING ON ANYWAY, IT'S THIS:
There is NO MORE TIME NOW for performing or writing. **WE HAVE NO TIME LEFT FOR THAT**

  7. Let the next documentary focus on the people who reaped the rewards of the those who earned the 50 cents on the dollar, how they treat the people they stepped on there whole lives. Let us see the shitty rich people who have abused the people there whole lives and it is time to start to shaming them and pointing out how they got to where are to the people around them, truth hurts social class.

  8. Security and safety in exchange for autonomy and anonymity is a perilous road to travel… The machine has eaten the poor and destitute all over planet earth by color creed and class, despots can create great armies out of needy people, the oligarchy free handout always comes with strings attached……. Careful gentlemen.

  9. So glad I caught this video. Will try to find a copy of the book , altho the subject's a little close to home – no pun there. I'm fortunate to get enough from Social Sec.at 73 to afford a little apt, but only because I moved to a state where rent is manageable.
Cost of living increases for Social Security – pennies automatically going to cover simultaneous Medicare increases – are jokes. There are so many older folks I see working waaay too long because their retirement doesn't cover housing AND food. – expenses that rise constantly.
If not for my family, I'd be in deep trouble. Sure I'm not alone in imagining ways to leave altogether. Just doesn't pay to struggle as the years add fruitless worries living poor in America.
Thanks so much for the interview/ critique 😉 .

  10. US colleges and universities discovered back in 70s that using "part-time" professors (actually starving grad students) was a cash cow, and so created yet another form of nomad, the adjunct faculty who are mules for teaching the basic-skill courses that make or break a school. When you do the math, they make less than minimum wage, no benefits no future. Now "part-time" is about 50% of US faculty, people in big states especially driven to live in their cars crossing huge states hustling several jobs a week. I did 22 years, went bankrupt, and managed to leave US by selling my 60-year family home. The last or only "power" I had was to withdraw my life energies from a life-wrecking profit machine.

  11. Don’t worry about economic survival in your 70s and 80s. The general population will be dead by age 70 as capitalism’s economic roadkill. Is that why the Social Security Administration wants you to wait until you’re 70 before taking benefits?

  12. Y'all should've interviewed Robin Barret, who's been a nomad for 4 years now. She's published books to help people make the switch to being houseless, and how/where to find jobs, especially well paying online jobs.

She also did a review of Nomadland on her channel, which left me thinking, nah, I'm not going to watch it. It sounds like the Tiger King version of vanlife.

  13. Believe it or not, George Carlin was the first person I heard to explain the difference between homeless and house less ness… in his 1992 “Jammin’ in New York” special, I think it was. The clip is here on YouTube. Just look up Carlin and homeless.
