Jennifer Bates was among the group of warehouse workers who initiated the process of forming a union at the Amazon fulfillment center in Bessemer, Alabama. Now, nearly a year later, Jennifer has testified in front of Congress and become one of the faces of the historic Amazon union drive that is currently underway. In the latest installment of our special series “Battleground Bessemer,” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez sits down with Bates at the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union (RWDSU) Mid-South Council headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. Alvarez and Bates discuss the tireless efforts by workers and RWDSU organizers to make the union vote a success, to combat Amazon’s constant union-busting efforts, and to spread the word to workers around the world that it’s time “to stand up and stand out.”

  1. Cops do not work for the citizens they work for satans asshole, "government & big corporations" to create revenue. Big Money in doing so they are allowed to rape take, and murder the public. There's no such thing as a good cop!

  2. This is such important work, and truly gives me hope to see people out there fighting the good fight!! Thank you Jennifer, and thank you Maximilian for your reporting. Union YES!!!

  3. We are proud of you Jennifer and all of you for taking a stand. I'm from Michigan, a manufacturing state. We are rooting for you, cheering you on. One point. HOW dare someone come up to you and speak about the cost of your housing. It is none of their business. What if someone was living in a $400 a month dump, just trying to save a dime to buy a better car, a house, to pay down bills. They need to shut the hell and quit counting your money. And they need to pay you rather than stupid ass Jeff Bezos adding to his billions. Greedy ass money hoarding ass hole. Who the hell are those clowns walking around trying to intimidate people all the time? Oh, their days are numbered. I hope you have the meanest Union people on the planet. Tear em up!

  4. I worked in a Ross store during Christmas in Honolulu. The worst job I have ever had. Micromanage every second, schedule change every week. No training, but we had to watch a video about why not to join a union. The associates (what ever that means). Worked so hard and great attitudes. I have great respect for anyone who works in retail. A living hell. But, working in Amazon treats the workers with such cruelty and inhuman conditions. This is outrageous. Unbelievable and sickening way to treat the people who help you make billions. What a amoral, sadistic bastard Bezos is.

  5. A narcissist will always climb upward by stepping on top of the dead bodies of their former employees.
I'll bet those union busting consultants are former cops.

  6. It is truly sad how so many people don't know who Jimmy Dore is.
I wear one of his Tee shirts to work as a sign of solidarity and as an effort to educate people.
If you don't know Jimmy Dore, you don't know much.

  7. As a union USPS worker I support Amazon workers trying to unionize as all Americans should.Samuel s. gomphers, American labor leader and AFL founder (from AFL-CIO) said,” What does labor want? We want more schoolhouses and less jails; more books and less arsenals; more learning and less vice; more leisure and less greed; more justice and less revenge; in fact, more of the opportunities to cultivate our better natures, to make manhood more noble, womanhood more beautiful, and childhood more happy and bright.”

  8. They need to get together with Walmart, McDonald’s… and unite! I hope to see a strong labor movement, workers need what is owed to them.

  9. Veterans for peace are also holding continuous vigils for peace against the American military war machine in Asheville. You all should visit and eat some ramps.

  10. I whole heartedly hope this election VOTES NO! For union representation – I may take a day off to sit back and laugh my ass off at all the idiots that think a stinkin union is going to make anything better. I hope this union fails and takes their mooching asses onto the next host employer to attempt to leach off of.

  11. I’m in a non profit and looking to start a union— this is inspirational, I hope they vote yes.
