Love this guy. I think what he's talking about is SPAN (Smartphone Area Network). Basically connecting everyone in a wide global network by bouncing data packets from phone to phone. It would be completely free to use, only costing battery power. FireChat is an app that is using such a mesh network, and people have used it to communicate in countries (Iraq, Hong Kong, Ecuador) where the government shut down the Internet in their country. However that app isn't open source, so it lacks that.
I agree also that patents are only bad news, and in fact money as a concept is hindering innovation and technology development. Only things that are scarce can have monetary value, even true for things we as human beings value a lot (like oxygen to breathe). Producing an abundance of technology would be economically unwise, as would producing an abundance of anything including food. Money is only a tool to control us all anyways. It's all about power and control, and money provides the power to coerce people to act in certain ways through work. It's all in hour heads, money isn't a real physical thing. We can't eat money. If you try to eat a dollar bill you're not really eating money, you're eating paper.

I completely agree with him. I've thought about patent system the same way as he does. It actually blocks progress. And it only caters to the greedy rich people. Getting patent is so expensive.

A way to make the system work better would be to make IP self assessed, and then charge a rising % until the property expires.
The IP can then be bought out at any time at the set price either by the state or competitors and returned to the public domain.
That way the filer of the IP has an incentive to try to set the price at a value near to it's actual accrued benefits.
If they set the price too high, they risk paying more tax than it is worth. If they set it too low, they risk being bought out at any point.
