Until recently, the horrifyingly unjust reality of America’s mass incarceration system has not been a central concern in popular political discourse. In the past few years, however, more people have learned about the brutality and inhumanity of mass incarceration as artists, activists, documentarians, and elected officials have called attention to the broken U.S. criminal justice system—and its disproportionate harm to Black and Brown people. But is this increased awareness of the problem translating to increased efforts to address it?
While officials like Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan say they’re reducing incarceration rates and improving prison conditions, the data tells a different story. For instance, the Justice Policy Institute’s report “Rethinking Approaches to Over Incarceration of Black Young Adults in Maryland” shows that Maryland incarcerates Black people at more than twice the national rate and leads the country in incarcerating young Black men. In this episode of “Rattling the Bars,” Eddie Conway speaks with Justice Policy Institute’s Marc Schindler and returning citizen Shasta Deen about how the repercussions of slavery are still felt in Maryland’s justice system.

It's scary that there is so much money incarcerating human beings. I know people must be punished for crimes but when there's profits involved there's incentive to lock anyone up for any reason.
But don't you have to commit a crime first
Marylin has the best courts don't figure
China is taking takeover
Quit doing crime and then they won't go to prison
Im from Ny. the majority of our prisons are black. But they are the majority of our violent crimes along w murder.
To fix this problem is much more serious then short prison sentences.
This is one of the many reasons why the European colonial regime of America needs to be diminished or destroyed.
Well did they commit crimes? And if they are young, what opportunities for ‘correction’ are they provided?
Yet AA support and vote for BIDEN . And he is responsible for MASS INCARCERATION . Which impacts black people
Has anyone ever asked WHY? Why blacks ?
The Hatred of Coloured People in Florida shows how The Civil War is never forgotten by Southern Republican Hate. Doo-Santey Sanctimonious Ron still plays Confederate War ideology –Texas threatens to Secede from the Union, but Floridians are facing a Genocidal War on WOKE and Coloured people. This is reversion back to Slavery of Negroes as it was in 1865. These Republicans are psychopathic and Choose the Naxi Paradox
Those damned politicians are the ones that should be locked up. Corrupt ass devils!
Use some common sense which dictates if you incarcerate people for walking home, standing while waiting for a ride, for being homeless or for being poor, you are g oing to have overpopulated prisons yet you still police for profit ,where people are arrested on stupid charges ,or where the are traffic offences that turn brutal because officers are telling you to comply and not resist while you have several men twisting your wrists forcing you to the ground while kneening you in the back and tasing you and they (the law)call this gaining compliance restaint techniques which is bs by the way ,what is happening is called taunting ,whereby they will brutally apply an arm restraint so as to ellicit a reponse from you just to justify their use of force and continue beating you up,if cops used more commonsense when dealing with minor infractions or misdemeanor charges there would be less incarceration ,,,,,just saying
Blacks need to leave Maryland. KKK STATE
I am not disagreeing with there being far too many people in prison for too long, or that those in prison should have been incarcerated in the first place. But would releasing large numbers of elderly prisoners based on the increasing costs due to medical costs be just another form of cruel mistreatment of people who would nt have the resources, skills or any assistance to be able to receive healthcare once released just cause a different problem, force some to return to crime to be put back in prison or to survive unless there was a plan in place to ensure they wouldn't just be released in order to save tax dollars.
You guys are pushing racism
Not to take away from the fact that what you're saying is true that there is a misrepresentation of incarceration among the black populace Baltimore particularly is a very violent city very violent city and it is 63% black so why isn't 63% percent of the inmates black.
HARRIS WAS ACTUALLY LAUGHING AT THE DEBATE AND BLACK PEOPLE ACTUALLY VOTED FOR THIS LADY.THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING SENDING BLACK MEN TO JAIL AND PRISON.
Maybe black females should stop coddling those black boys to pure failure. They should stop caring for those males like they are girls. They take those males into their homes and around their kids, bad idea. Many see the black male as a mule to be used for criminal activity. Once they are ruined that's it, there is no redemption.
Did the commit the crime
