In 2014, at the age of 15, Prakash Churaman was arrested at his home at 6AM without a warrant. After driving him around for a few hours, police brought Churaman to the 113th Precinct and, as Churaman and his attorney maintain, coerced a confession out of him for a crime he did not commit. As reported in the Queens Daily Eagle, “Prosecutors say Churaman was one of the gunmen in a robbery gone wrong when Churaman, alongside two others, allegedly broke into his friend’s home and ended up fatally shooting [Taquane] Clark and injuring one other. An elderly woman who lived in the home during the robbery later told police that she recognized Churaman’s voice and identified him as one of the suspects. Her testimony, which is at the crux of the prosecution’s case, has been called into question by Churaman’s attorney.” Even after the court overturned Churaman’s conviction, he is still fighting to clear his name and is now facing a second trial after declining to take a plea deal.

In this episode of Rattling the Bars, Eddie Conway talks with Churaman and his attorney Jose Nieves about how the criminal justice system railroads juveniles into false confessions, and about the ongoing fight to get all charges against Churaman dropped.

  1. Bryan Steven's said That there has never been more innocent people incarcerated in the US at any other point in history.
Every part of the criminal injustice is flawed and biased and corrupt from cops, prosecutor, judges, cop crime labs including forensic DNA interruption, our law makers who were themselves prosecutors. I find it horrifying that the mass public is so damn ignorant

  2. I was arrested and charge d for tresspass on my own property and three other felonies added falsely prosecuted ycso staking me still

  3. Yes we need to educate our communities on how to protect themselves and their children. I disagree with you on one thing – there are no good cops. The good cops quit because they cannot stomach the injustice system. So, what's left in the barrel are the bad, rotten cops only. Also, you should put some more information for those who want to help this man.

  4. Police are Hero's, they protect the public . If you believe this you are brain washed and blind tobwhatd going on around you. The police in Jesus day was just doing their job when they arrested and killed him.

  5. During an "interview"/interrogation such as this ( especially when a parent/guardian is present) at what point does the parent/guardian or should they they intervene on behalf of their child and say ENOUGH, NO MORE QUESTIONS UNTIL MY CHILD HAS LEGAL REPRESENTATION!

…pressure should be placed on the Magistrate or whatever Judge is on duty to sign warrants to hold accountable ANY/EVERY/ALL Officers, Supervisor, etc. who submits false information for the sake of obtaining a baseless warrant…on the same subject, Prosecutors, Pre-trial Investigators, District Attorneys should be held accountable for not refusing charges on questionable cases and not destroy lives, regardless of age, ethnicity or ability/inability to make bail for the sake of the number (rather than the quality) of cases and the quality and validity of cases and arrests!

  6. NYPD is probably the most corrupted agency in the US. how about the court upheld my conviction after me and the judge proved the cop was in fact lying. There is a special place in hell for these lawless crooked tyrants. One is stupid to believe that they can continually screw up peoples lives in this manner, and not think or believe that there won't be any consequences when all is said and done. There will be justice in the end. Weather you believe in God or not, he believes in you, and says "Vengeance is mine."

  7. .
Parents, teach your children not to talk to police.

Myself posted video: ''''Backpack Search and Seizure''''. My pinned comment worth reading.

  8. Man this is infuriating and sad. I hope this young man gets his full freedom and the asses of everyone involved!!!

  9. Why are we not holding these cops accountable? Even the prosecutor knows the game, and still it goes on.
The damage this behavior inflicts is incredible. Innocent families and individuals are being destroyed emotionally, financially and even physically.

  10. Teach your kids that they have the right to remain silent, and to say they want an attorney. Don't talk to the cops, other than the minimum of identification (which is required in a lot of states). Don't be rude, just be firm. ❤️

  11. It's disgusting and disturbing how they can get a warrant to violate someone because someone says they heard your voice before that's suspicious in itself

  12. I agree, cop's should stand for what they do wrong. They always get away with things because they are the police. They also Can be crooked. Nothing but love for you 🥰🥰🥰

  13. The DA or Prosecutor needs to face disbarment for trying to prosecute a case fully knowing the man is innocent . A crackdown on police is needed . Its time police are fully held accountable with jail time and fines , losing the right to ever be a cop or own guns .
