Earlier this year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an international body of UN scientists, delivered a “final warning” to drastically cut global emissions in order to prevent the heating of the planet past 1.5 degrees Celsius. As the exponentially accelerating effects of the climate crisis have become more apparent in recent years, so too has activism to demand urgent action from governments. In the UK, a movement known as Extinction Rebellion (XR) first emerged in 2018, and then proliferated around the globe. XR has helped popularize the spread of civil disobedience tactics in the contemporary environmental movement. But what is the movement’s theory of change? How does XR seek to proceed from direct action tactics to systems change on a timescale that matches the rapidly degrading state of our the earth’s ecological systems? Roger Hallam, co-founder of XR and leader of the activist organization Just Stop Oil, joins The Chris Hedges Report for a conversation on tactics and strategy to save the planet, which ultimately requires transforming the system.

Just Stop Oil will be staging a series of slow marches around the streets of London on April 24th: https://juststopoil.org/2023/04/15/just-stop-oil-supporters-slow-march-through-cambridge-and-reading-ahead-of-sustained-campaign-in-london-from-april-24/

  1. The truth is we are totally screwed whatever we do. Western industrial civ is a heat engine that is out of control. The next few years are going to define the coming century. Ag production and financial collapse is right around the corner. Unfortunately wind, solar, batteries and EV will not save us. We just don't have the mining infrastructure or minerals in the ground at sufficiently high ore levels to produce the materials necessary for the green energy revolution. War is probably inevitable. Good luck!

  2. Since we are in a carbon drought it is a very good thing that carbon emissions are increasing. This is institutionalized fear mongering plain and simple. Carbon is essential for life and nowhere has it been demonstrated that it causes temperature to rise. It is phony data picking and fabrication.
Something drastic needs to happen? How about we start with a muzzle for Hallam and his ilk.

  3. Co2 isn't as big of a problem as the thinning of the Earth crust. If we don't stop bombing this all life on this planet will end.
One percent of this planet is all that is solid.
However now its fractured alot . A gravel crust of the Earth will sink and melt.
Bombing this planet is the worst idea anyone has ever had.
Because the Capitalists make the big money from war..There not going to stop unless we stop them. Making money worthless will do the trick.
All we must do is revolt against money all on the same day.
First everyone needs to get the idea that we need this eternal infernal parasite called money out of their heads.
We have just gone through 6000 years of capitalism/ Christianity. If this is the answer then why are we on the verge of extinction?

  4. Again, binary choice #1 sit there be miserable and do nothing? Do something active? OK….In 2007 I was told what the future looked like and I accepted it. Since then I watched the situation globally and realized that my source on the inevitable collapse is looking bang on the money. You can sit there and be miserable but you have a third choice. Acceptance, joy and love for what you have at this moment. Gratitude. Think of it like being given a 4 year terminal illness piece of news by your doc. No chemo (there is not cure-eventually you will realize that and the sooner the better). You have a choice. Search for a new cure with every moment you have, Sit and do nothing and be miserable, acceptance gratitude and love for the time you have left. When I was given a 4 year terminal illness diagnosis I went for the latter. I suggest you do the same. All of you. You have a right to be angry. Yes you have been deceived by Big Oil,, yes someone should be made to pay. You keep thinking there is a solution. What is that exactly cause the worlds greatest minds have not been able to come up with it. Justifiable anger is a killer. Resentment is the poison pill i swallow hoping you will die. Are you getting this? I'm not your enemy but if this makes you want to attack me by all means. waste more time in an angry state.

  5. Complicit with genocide? Well, that reminds me of Bush giving me two choices. With us or against us. You are alienating yourself from the masses.I will tell you that there is a third choice. Acceptance of what is happening and our inability to change it. Sorry but this is the real situation and the members of the Extinction Rebellion might have a better life (with what is left) by retting real. If you have studied the situation you should know there is really no way to change what is happening. Let me repeat. There is no solution that is doable to the situation. The multi level situation across many players is not solvable. Evolve and enjoy the time that is left. It is absolutely pointless to chain yourself to a podium. I hear 'murder' and the elites are guilty. Yes well, there is more going on than that. When you say those things you rile up the masses and they chain themselves to podiums and become victims. It's someone else's fault and I am helpless. You need to move forward my friend. Acceptance to what is and stop the blame game. yes there are greedy guilty parties that didnt help. It's so complex. Maybe look at the last 30 years and see that nothing worked. Why is your movement going to since anything. How? The elites the elites the elites…..we are going extinct. Stopping the Elites isn't going to help you.

  7. There is obviously not 🚫 A climate change it is All bullshit for people that have nothing else to do but block the roads for law abiding FOLKS..God is in Control 🛂🎛️..

  8. Now I'm at 21 xr videos. I understand that you know how to protest. What's xr solution? Complaining without a solution is pointless. How do you get people to go back to 1800 living?

  9. I'm 76 years old and I know that I will never experience the worst of this. Apparently many are thinking that climate devastation will not affect them. Billionaires have secured properties in New Zealand believing that they will remain safe there. But an aching planet will not forgive what neoliberal thinking and denial of reality has done.

  10. How about ‘Just Stop Wars’ for a start? It’s amazing how these climate activists foam at the mouth about oil and such but have no qualms regarding the carbon footprint of wars that feed the military industrial complex and kill thousands and displace millions. The blowing up of the Nordstream pipeline, the largest eco-terrorism act yet barely rated a mention from any of these activists. Those who disagree with the climate models and imputations of these models that suggest an emergency are sacked or smeared a la the Covid Playbook with the Barrington Declaration and the war on Ivermectin etc. Enough already. Please.

  11. Sticking your head in a hole( interpret that how you will) is the fools and cowards way out it is effectively a choice for collective species suicide.

  12. Humanity can not even stop our habitual practice of regularly veering into armed conflict. Warefare depends almost exclusively on the heavy use of fossil fuel. Therefore, the extraction of these environmental poisons will never stop.

  13. Dear Mr. Hedges, you keep calling these people the ruling elites, which suggests you are putting them on a pedestal or revering them for their standing in life. How you should be referring to them is " the ruling elitists," which suggests that because of their money and power, they think they are better than all of us.

  14. I hate Extinction Rebellion but that man shouldn’t have been jailed for 4 months just because of something he said.

  15. Shell polled their share holders about the raging forest fires (which probably are set to aid the unacknowledged geoengineering agenda). 8O% responded: LET IT BURN!!!

  16. These idiots should realize that you can't fix the climate, unless you fix the people. Garbage is more of a problem than cars and trucks.. I'll run them over if they block me from living my life. Emissions from Manufacturers out weigh the individual footprint. Maybe start there, instead of affecting the public trying to live life as best they can.

  17. At this point, I am much more worried about the end of humanity due to a nuclear WW3 scenario than I am about climate change. Why is there almost no civil disobedience about military escalation of that conflict.

  18. Im ©️♾️✝️🌈❤️🫶🌍🌳😍💋🌏😇💪🕴️🦄😎👍🎭💐💃💯🎤🎤🫂🌙🌟🌞😢🌎🫶❤️♾️🌈✝️👍🌳💯

  19. What he refuses to say is that CO2 represents.04% of the atmosphere. When he cites increases in carbon by parts per million is designed to make fossil fuels look as bad as possible. He is a huge useful idiot for societal upheaval. Distortion of the truth is evil.

  20. Very useful interview for a conservative or libertarian. It begins to dawn on me what this younger generations movement is up to. And I gladly condone it.

  21. Stupid degrowth Malthusean garbage. You really think these actions of blocking major roads are going to win regular working people over? It pisses people off making them late for work, possibly being fired….messing with a person's livelihood is the absolute wrong way to win them over. It breeds contempt.

Further, it's a slap in the face to developing countries to tell them it's just too bad you can't have stable energy sources and a better existence because we in developed countries don't think your life is more important than our beef with oil companies….your population, your society needs to be minimized to reduce consumption so that we may continue to live in comfort.

    Punk Western chauvinists. It's disgusting.

  22. So this guy wants to destroy the way you hear yourselves, he wants to literally kill you, this is what , millions will die without heat, spouting rubbish, real crap spouting
