China-gate is next. The GOP is working on the claim, and they will probably dole it out if the midterm elections don’t work out for them well enough. But it will be a more successful propaganda piece than Russia gate ever was because there is more ideological built up to start from: Many progressives and Democrats don’t see China as the authoritarian state that it is as much as they see Russia, the favourite devil. China is quickly moving towards becoming leader in AI technologies, and they have much more practice and few inhibitions to create an Orwellian dystopia of total surveillance and control by bait and switch techniques using rewards and punishment.This Big. Brother under construction is the social credit system that they want to have up and running in most of China by 2020, a system that unites a fully censored and monitored social media, plus internet of things, with peer-to-peer financial transactions and financialization of every aspect of the economy. In their talkiing about it they use the word comprehensive a lot. At the same time, this project and much of the underlying technology is eyed by big social media in the West with great envy. They all want to get in the huge Chinese market, and for that they are more and more willing to abandon principles about protecting privacy, and are more willing now than ever to support censorship, while giving the keys to the state, no matter if that’s China or the USA. Because many of the same technologies are used in China and in the West, there is more and more bleed over in both directions. So it would not be surprising if Google and Facebook and others open the firewalls a bit for the Chinese, to get in return a little more access to the Chinese social media and internet, of course under full supervision and participation and even direct cooperation of both countries’ security apparatuses. And those both cooperate as much as they fight each other. So I would expect that there is more than enough material that someone could make the case for China-gate. Probably, as usual, some leak, or faked leaks. Trump might tweet something like “I thought President Xi was my friend, but he betrayed me. They messed with Twitter, Facebook and Google. Not good. And he listened to my phone calls and helped the Dems. Bad really bad. So so disappointed â€.
One part of such a spin might be already underway: A few days ago there was a story on PBS where some security experts were lamenting about Trump’s sloppiness with phones and social media. They were of course complaining about the Chinese, and we have heard this story with manipulated hardware to build backdoors into communication systems, for example phones, and also cctv cameras. The Chinese had been asked if they tried to listen into Donald’s chats with his buddies. And the answer from China was like: Emh, no, but if you want better cyber security why don’t you purchase equipment from China for the Whitehouse? They were joking of course, but who knows: was it Xi who suggested this to Donald? That might make for another good story. Let’s see if the GOP picks it up.

15:28 This is disturbing (and also what I have been fearing ever since at least PropOrNot), and could be devastating in terms of racial crime and even violence, as there are 5M+ (compared to 3M+ Americans of self-reported Russian descent) Chinese Americans, who are obviously far more visible than those of Russian ethnicity. All it takes is the slightest repeat of the 1996 Clinton campaign finance scandal and the far-right rabble already stimulated by Trump and Fox could threaten to add more Vincent Chin cases.

Geez, I'm a fifty-seven year old woman from Australia who just wants a planet that my grandchildren can survive in and Facebook decided that I was obviously too left wing and stopped me from sharing posts that mean a lot to me. I have now cancelled my account. I tried to find an alternative but not sure where to go.
