Professor Charles Derber really nails it here. The reason that they use fear is because it works. Humans are motivated by only two emotions. It’s either fear or love, or more accurately—love or lack of love.
In some ways the best illustration for this is politics. Fear is growing as resources dry up with climate change and with capitalism extracting more wealth for the 1%. Fascism is taking over and the elite want another war to save capitalism and their profits.
It looks like it will happen because there is no real opposition. They have been systematically and relentlessly ground into dust either by the oppression of capitalism or the influence and control the ruling class use trying to save it.

Correctly said it must be said, not everyone is a political simpleton, the question is to know how many are in the first category et how many in the second category. Not to forget about those who know a fair amount of what the reality is but have no energy or incentive to do anything in the political arena. Not a simple matter to look into, a kind of equation which needs much more than just circulated pieces of information, often seen as irrelevant to many who, to often, ignore politics not realising that politics do not ignore them, far from it, since it is politics which dictate at various level from the price of our foods to the condition of working not to say being out of work, etc ……..
GLOBAL WARMING has also the role of FEARMONGERING. Think about that . . .

It's worth noting that this approach to control of the population dates back a very long time. The Spartan elite had a well-organised plan of keeping their helots or feudal-slaves scared and ill. Spartan elite landowners were actually fined if they let their helots get too healthy, as it only increased the chances that the helots would revolt and seize some of the wealth of the state.

The big banks, oil companies, defense contractors and media companies are a unified group who control America. This corporatism is how Mussolini defined fascism. Trump isn't standing up to the corporatists, but Hillary wouldn't have either. Sanders would, which is why the corporate media is attacking him so much.
It has never been a meritocracy. Too bad fox news has made a couple generations of conservatives think that the poor are poor because they simply aren't working hard enough when the reality is that poor people have hard jobs. Ever work in fast food? It's actually hot and frustrating. Ever work in labor? It's difficult and leaves you tired.
It didin the 60's either. Things may have been ok for some from 1930 something – the 1960's, but the US existed prior to that. And things weren't all that great for many up until the 60's either.
The biggest difference between Hitler and Trump, besides world war 2 and the holocaust (enormous differences) is that Hitler fought in World War 1, and came from a working class background. His fascism and racism came out of the ruinous capitalist war and old empires of World War 1. Trump, on the other hand, is born into enormous wealth and privilege, never fought or even served in the military. His fascism is based upon racist, corrupt capitalism; and has used this unjust capitalism to spread fear and hate about immigrants, muslims, and other minority racial groups
The use of pseudo-satisfiers to meet basic human needs has been very well established but it appears that Charlie kind of glossed over the entire research field to conflate economic wants with societal and human needs.
This is a very important discussion for Americans. The impoverished have been brainwashed to protect the rich, even at their own peril. Made to believe that slavery equals "freedom".
The patriot act was passed in 2001. It's not Trump. He is just feasting on the meal that has been prepared for him.
You should be a lot more worried about America than you probably hear. Here’s the hard, brutal, unforgiving truth. Authoritarian meltdowns proceed in predictable, consistent ways, made of four classic stages which follow each other   and America’s having a textbook one. You can accuse me of alarmism if you want , but I think that these days, not being sufficiently alarmed is the true mistake. don't you? according to the following four steps. Think of them like dominoes falling. Each one makes the next a little easier to knock down. The legislative, executive, judiciary , the branches of government are taken over by fanatics and extremists in that order. Bang, bang, kaboom! Sometimes it takes a decade or two . sometimes just a year or two. Sometimes it takes hard work ,  sometimes it’s as easy as pie. But the sequence is consistent, predictable, and reliable. There’s an inner logic to it. The last to fall is the judiciary because it is the most independent, the hardest to crack  and also a democracy’s last refuge, because if the courts can’t decide against tyrants…who is there left? That sets up the fourth step , social implosion. the fourth step of social implosion, a society finally turning into a failed, collapsed democracy, a truly authoritarian state, not just politically, but also culturally, socially, psychologically, economically, a place from which there’s often no coming back for generations. How could there be? There’s no check now from any branch on the others, on an executive or legislative or judicial power, the following things to happen, in more or less the following sequence. Sham elections, which are rigged, controlled, manipulated, and outright doctored, in oddly comical ways ! 99% of Russian Vote for Putin!!. Serial and systemic human rights abuses. Crackdowns on dissent. The raiding of the public purse, in broad daylight. Expropriation of minorities, and demonization of marginalized communities ,  to give the “true†people a sense of power. Hate and rage become social norms, celebrated and applauded. Society becomes something very much like modern-day Russia , just  ugly, backwards, uncultured, ruled by its thugs and criminals and mafias, the most violent and abusive rising to the top. Inequality widens, poverty grows, life expectancy falls ,  fuelling more rage and anger, directed downwards at the hated others, not upwards at those responsible for it  and so the vicious cycle continues. Wham! Implosion. it’s no surprise that America’s own worst, it’s most greedy, selfish, and abusive had no compunction whatsoever about doing exactly and precisely that to their very own country. But the rest of us  of the decent, thinking, intelligent ones left ," should!" ~PEACE!

any doubters of Fascism: look up DHS's "Gang Stalking" program. they hire private security contractors, police, community organizations like Ambulance, Taxi, and involve "Neighborhood Watch" to snitch, harass, stalk, surveil Americans who are considered "outcasts". ie. Fusion Centers, Citizens Core. this tactic is taken directly from Zersetzung, a Stasi Psychological Warfare technique.
