The near-constant barrage of climate disasters pummeling the US is having an unforeseen political effect. As FEMA struggles to keep up with the magnitude and frequency of disasters, far right militias like the Oath Keepers are filling the vacuum to build trust and organize. In a recent article for Grist, Zoya Teirstein looks at what these efforts looked like on the ground in Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Zoya joins The Marc Steiner Show for an in-depth look at this phenomenon.

Zoya Teirstein is a staff writer at Grist covering climate change and public health.

  1. Oh noo hawaiians are bringing much needed food clean water generators toys clothes supplies to Hawaii, they so happens to be right wingers, so their supplies must be taken by fema by police and hoarded by the state. This is why I unsubscribed from @TheRealNews just like @DemocracyNow @TYT and @BreakingPoints like to use leftist populist language to sheepherd for the democrat party.

  2. The truth:

The climate has always changed as it is still coming out of the ice age.

The other planets are experiencing solar changes also, especially since we are at the peak of the sun's 11 year solar cycle.

We are also dawning on the next micronova from our sun which happens every 12,000 years creating the next ice age.
See-Suspicious Observers for scientific data please

This is all foretold by the ancient texts from around the world and we should be returning to the underground for the next equatorial melting when we reimerge.

  3. You only mention the far right extremist problem. We all know it takes 2 to Tango. Who is the counterbalance? Are the antagonists also not a problem? We are discussing extremist groups? Then please mention the other party to the problem for a more balanced discussion.

  4. At least the oath keepers are moral, ethical. The Left is off it rockers there is nothing moral or ethical associated with the left in America anymore.
Biden, the democrats and the democrat first republicans are destroying this country for the one world government.
They sold the American citizen down the creek without a patle
A sickening combination of monopoly bankers owning government.

  5. This is the same modus operandi of religious groups using charity to proselytize. There are fundamentalist churches specifically setting up in poor communities with many problems. They offer food banks and support in return for acceptance and allegiance. As long as governments and local authorities cut funding, it will always give an in for do-gooders as well as dishonest actors.

However, it can also be used in similar ways by any group that wants to recruit followers or extend its reach. And so, why don’t actual humanist organizations set up cooperative humanist schools, elder care, community centres and healthcare/nutrition programmes in poorer neighbourhoods? I think it’s time that we accept that government and local authorities are not going to be our only hope (as it were). Where officialdom wants to help, they have no funds. Where they might have funds their hands are tied by red tape.

  6. If I remember correctly Arendt explains that popular fascism is the result of citizens being unable to trust that the government works or put another way that the system isn't working. I've heard that the far right is also doing outreach in places like farmer's markets where a soft sell may not bring people in today but softens attitudes toward them, so maybe tomorrow or next month.

  7. Why not mention the title (and date of publication) of Zoya Teirstein's Grist article in the video description above?

  8. Maybe right wing groups actually do care about their communites and country which says so much about the left sitting around making up stories and wining because they are weak and wait for Daddy government to come save them, instead of praising the real heroes who care and act in an emergeny situation.

  9. We are all EXPENDABLE, no matter your background or ethnicity. The ONLY humans our government cares about have ocean going yachts and 10 figure net worths. Small club. Nobody here is in it

  10. Whats the differance between left or right when it comes to preparing a community in case of disaster? The proud boys were infiltrated with feds, so i doubt they would be an issue, and if there was a left wing group organizing simalarly, would that constatute being alarmed?

  11. These organizations are the US Taliban. This is not hyperbole. It is exactly why the Taliban was able to take over Iraq.

  12. This was a really interesting interview about something happening under our noses. I think Steiner was right to emphasize the leadership of organizations like these are often led by very somber-minded and calculating people. It's been shown that "well-educated" people often fall prey to scams because they think they're too smart for it to happen to them. A lot of these "conspiracies" often center around ideas involving concepts like the military-industrial complex, the dangers of corporate money in politics, etc. Liberals underestimate just how many views they might have in common with the militiamen! We say they are angry because their government treats them with malicious indifference then we call them crazy for embracing anti-government views. I don't hold it against a person for looking at this country and seeing a need to act to protect themselves, their families, and communities. It is a tragedy there are those who can so expertly channel that energy into hatred.

  13. Wow! Your YouTube and Twitter have almost NO traffic. Is that why you are trying to push this outlandish stuff? Because you’re broke? Or is this the reason you are broke?🤔

  14. yeah it's real worrying, the far right taking advantage of people who are basically being abused and neglected by their country and state…this is the prelude to fascist governments rising.

  15. military survival training is the best and the worst. it is taught in context of having 20 plus men supporting each man in the field. the military knows networking and supply. their is no sustainability in their methods and it breeds an overconfidence that is false and born to fail without constant monetary support and supplies. amazing they r have been this successful.

  16. Yavapai county is a scary place. I moved there during Covid and left shortly after. The amount of white supremacist tattoos I saw in Prescott town square made me nope out of that town

  17. I believe President Lincoln made the same mistake you're making right now Mr. Steiner. You see President Lincoln thought he could understand and even work with the people who wanted to destroy him and the nation. By doing that he ensured his destruction. I am a 53 year old black man in America. My experience with far-right white Christian conservatives tells me that they're evil has nothing to do with FEMA. FEMA or no FEMA these men would still want me and my family dead. I'm sorry but I am not with you on this one. I do not believe in those men's better angels.

  18. I remember 5 years ago about in /cocoa /fl. we were hit by Fracis Jeane and one other roof really damaged. Jeanne was 120mph straight line winds continuous that blew through the concrete walls of the house. State ins would not pay delay delay then paid a little after getting a lawyer and left the state. Not paying 1000s and came back net year selling ins. again.

  19. There are still blue tarps on roofs in the Gulf from hurricanes past. Thanks, Marc, for addressing this. The US government is creating the perfect storm by not responding to the needs of its citizens.
