Even though German environmental groups say that Germany transition away from coal by 2038 is laudable, it is not as rapid as is needed to comply with the Paris Climate agreement. But it is an important first step, says PERI’s Bob Pollin

  1. Use more ethanol and windmills. That way the fossil fuel industry can make more money and people pay higher energy prices while damaging the environment even more but you can be more green.

  2. They care so much about these 20000 jobs that have no future. They killed 80000 jobs in solar when they ended their support for solar, and they are right now risking 60000 jobs in wind energy. People want to get out of coal, and it is possible today, what the government essentially said is: No, fuck you, we will protect coal until 2038. They will likely continue to fight renewable energy to justify the continued existence of coal, if they would let renewables grow, a shutdown of coal would happen earlier. TRNN does not seem to fully comprehend the context.

  3. If the fossil subsidies was transferred onto rolling out Photo Bio Reactors( PBR) in every locality, they are easy, cheap and quick to buiid, and could be rolled out in just 5 years. To grow Carbon Negative Algea Bio Fuel. We could use the world’s ICE Vehicles to Sequester Carbon, while creating millions of local climate saving jobs, and bring in large amounts of money for other low tech solutions, reforestation, food forests, Water Source Heat Pumps etc etc. https://youtu.be/qSOq88bbjIs

  4. Forget about if they leave it till then we are fucked, if we ain’t already!. We NEED an total end to fossil fuel use by 2025!.

  5. "transition" … bla blah blaa. Reality: car sales at highest ever (with direct state subsidies, again andagian) Average horsepower,: highest ever.

  6. Coal can easily be replaced anyway … e.g. by burning "biomass", i.e. mostly woodpellets, preferably cheap ones harvested by clearcutting and imported from other continents, and burning of which (despite producing more CO2 per MWh) is accounted for as "carbon-neutral" (rur hur hur, a good one) – just look at GB for a glorious example

  7. what's – by some – being trumpeted forth as "'Germany's Exit from Coal by 2038'" – that's why now they (e.g. RWE) are clearing forests with much police brutality against activists and tearing up new open pit mines for which whole villages are depopulated. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

"Until now, 40,000 owners had to give up their land to the big coal-producer, and were forced to relocate against their will. For Garzweiler alone, 12 villages have to be demolished. 7,600 inhabitants are scheduled for relocation." [the coal-producer referred to is the German utility company RWE, Garzweiler one of its surface mines] — "Électricité, le montant de la facture" (2016) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5720730/quotes

  8. They are going to need all that coal until the upcoming global cooling period occurs. Our earth is heading into a mini ice age partly due to the grand solar minimum cycle. No one is talking about this in the mainstream media and warning people as to what's coming . We are being fed global warming everyday. Germany needs to just get that nordstream 2 and they will be fine
