Global ‘hyper-inequality’ exploded during the pandemic – Everything Law and Order Blog

The concentration of wealth in the hands of a select few has become a global problem that poses a threat to the basic functioning of our societies. According to a landmark new analysis by the Institute for Policy Studies, Oxfam, the Fight Inequality Alliance, and Patriotic Millionaires, “A wealth tax of 2% on the world’s millionaires, 3% on those with wealth above $50 million and 5% on the world’s billionaires would raise $2.52 trillion dollars annually. This would be enough to lift 2.3 billion people out of poverty, make enough vaccines for the whole world, and deliver universal health care and social protection for all the citizens of low and lower middle-income countries (3.6 billion people).”

In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc discusses the extent of global wealth concentration and the far-reaching implications of instituting a global wealth tax with Chuck Collins, one of the co-authors of the report. Chuck Collins is the director of the Program on Inequality and the Common Good at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he co-edits the IPS website Inequality.org. He is also the author of Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good.

  1. This sounds really good but you have to understand the people with the power are also the people with the money. Tax fairness is a joke because they’re never going on allow it. Even the people in the government are people with money that want to protect people with money

  2. A lot of debtors become the revenue for the wealthy. If we alleviate their debt then there would be far less money for taxes.

  3. I think this polite decorum of taxing the wealthy is ridiculous. You are not going to get them to adhere to decorum of law. At this point there’s only one way forward and it’s either them or us.

  4. Your problem began in 1933 with FDR and fiat, and the socialists managed the rest,
you lost the constitution in 1939, and you still haven't figured it out. Government is
NOT your solution, and what you need to focus on is the "rentier" class…which is
    essentially non-productive as is government.

  5. The revolt is so long overdue to stop the oligarchs from hoarding wealth and buying politicians to legislate against the interests of the majority. Cant wait for a real revolution.

  6. Wealth taxes?
What we need are wealth caps, if we really want to stop the undemocratic political and social influence of the rich. No one should possess more than 10 million dollars in total wealth, end of discussion. A person could live comfortably off their interest and dividends for the rest of their life with wealth like that. Nobody needs to possess more.

  7. Don’t tax them. That money disappears before it gets through the state house. You owe them 5 trillion dollars for 2020 and 2021. Just let the rich directly deposit it into these people’s bank accounts or pocket. No strings! Start with that and we can see how it goes for everybody! And everybody wins! Then you crash the empire because you’re homicidal psychopaths. The power structure flatlines for just a minute and then a little heartbeat starts and I enjoy the flatline for a minute! You’ll be ready because you’re setting up your mutual aid networks and starting your parallel power structures however according to your needs. I’m central and I want to start building the Venus Project . It’s a resource based self sustaining circle city. We’ll be comfortable. Well make some friends around the world when we get educated. It’ll only hurt for a minute.
