The conflict between incumbent and winning president Jokowi and his conservative challenger Prabowo has led to violent protests, 8 deaths, and hundreds of injured, but Prabowo’s challenge to the election result has largely failed. Does this mean that the rightward shift has been halted?

  1. A significant segment of the left in Indonesia is anarchist. I'm not sure how that would effect the electoral left's success or if that even plays a role

  2. Indonesia is not a democracy, just like the US isn't, Russia isn't, the UK isn't and so forth. These are all republics that use a vote (not always democratically, look at the US historically and currently) to pick representatives. Republics are not democracies, and voting for a representative is not a democratic act.

  3. Any chance the Indonesian election had anything to do with the Australian federal raid on the homes of Australian journalists and offices at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation? The Australian corporate sector has a vested interest in maintaining access to resources under pretext of national security in West Papua and Timor-Leste… or was the raid exclusively focused on inhibiting public revelations concerning crimes committed in Afghanistan?

  4. If you talk about Indonesia, you should check out what is happening in Thailand. There was a military coup in 2014. The country was totally under military ruled. Many people who opposed to the coup were jailed. Some went exile to the neighbor countries like Laos, Cambodia. Those in exile were brutally killed (possible by the Thai military). Finally the junta allowed the election on March 24 this year after they rewrote a new constitution in order for them to continue their power.. It was a great set up election. The results of the election wasn’t announced until the end of May(almost 2 months after the election).. The junta appointed 250 senators to vote for him. People were allowed to vote for 500 representatives. With many manipulation and vote buying, the junta was chosen to continue his military government on June 5. The election was so corrupted that I can’t even describe in here. I am appalled that nobody talks about how corrupted the election in Thailand is. Read more stories from New Mandala, Political Prisoners of Thailand.

  5. The "red bloc", as they call it just won the election in Denmark. Positive trend….A Corbyn-Sanders trans Atlantic left alliance is becoming more and more possible… IF that were to happen, it would have profound repercussions globally. A lot of conflict with the Davos powers naturally and hopefully some changes for the better..Got to hope

  6. How can you have a global right wing trend when economically speaking it was already a right wing world.

What you have now is a trend towards the far right after the repeated failures of capitalism globally destroyed any legitimacy remaining in centrist and traditional right wing parties.

  7. Watched Jakarta polling booths which were diligently carried out with party and lots of public witnesses. A number of poll watching groups covered these events a photos official results were sufficiently circulated for rough counts to be within 2% points of final counts.
