  1. She hasn’t been updated by Dr. Keanu Sai chairman of the Council of Regency for the Hawaii Kingdom. Hawaiian Kingdom still exists and is NOT nor EVER was the 50th state of amerika. It is under illegal occupation of the USA. This is and has been verified by The Hague and other nations around the world. I would love to see that story covered. The lies must be uncovered and all this can go away.

  2. If you are arguing against the construction of the TMT using arguments that the mountain is "sacred", you are anti-scientific by definition. Simple as that.

  3. If they wanted to build a luxury apartment block I could understand it. But this is so important for astronomy. Although obviously they should look at the Canary Islands first. But surely it’s important enough to justify.

  4. Well, with everything going on in the world right now, the most important thing we can do is spend our time looking into space. Theres no big problems going on on Earth that really need our attention…

  5. I just got off the phone with this ancient indigenous Hawaiian Priestess Elder, she said " let them build the 30 meter telescope it will benefit the modern world, here in the ancient world we have no need to look into a large tube to look up to the heaven we just look Within ourselves from there we can see distance stars, the Milky Way and the cosmos, humble yourselves my children for a better tomorrow will soon come."

  6. The people of Hawaii can abandon their current living standards and go back to what they once were in order to make as little impact as possible on the whole island and not just on this fucking mountain. Hypocritical people.

  7. I've loved astronomy since a little kid, and I am currently working towards my bachelor's in astronomy at the University of Washington, as well as working at the UW planetarium.

Mauna Kea belongs to the Hawaiians, and if they oppose TMT, I do too. Initiatives like these can not succeed in opposition to community, and our research projects will never be more important than indigenous rights. We should thank indigenous groups for protecting natural areas because preserving them benefits everyone.

  8. Though there is quite a bit one can say to this, I guess for now I'll refrain from further comment other than, I don't see why there is a problem with building a telescope there.

  9. we can't allow a few people to block the forward progress of mankind for religious reasons-
that mountain belongs to all of us.

  10. Has Tulsi Gabbard spoken up about this? You know a real easy a real just way to settle things like this= let the people the local people vote in a transparent election so they can decide what they have to live with.

  11. A nice shot of police thugs in the so called "protect and serve" role. Body armor and armament against t-shirts and papli hats.

  12. Take down the old telescopes to make room for the new one balance the equation…

Sounds like a reasonable first step, no littering.
    .

  13. “Our people will be crushed…” sob sob. Oh for fuck sake, lady—get a grip. For those that can see through your game, we know this isn’t about preserving anything except your victimhood status, and taking political power for yourselves, no matter the cost. Cry sacred and and act High Maka Maka if you must, but some of us know it’s all just self-serving bullshit to prove you can get your way if you trick everyone into believing your made up gods are real.. And you call yourself a “scientist.”

  14. There are other places to build the telescope, but you cannot move holy lands. Hasn’t anyone learned what happens when you destroy a peoples culture, history and beliefs? Read a history book!

  15. there are native hawaiins? never knew that the islands were settled before the european invasions.

  16. Most these people never use this land until this comes up they act like there second home is on the tmt site. There is plenty of space on that mountain for everyone.

  17. It is sad that astronomy is a victim of native Hawaiian nationalism opportunistically attacking it . There was no access to the mountain before the road was built. 5 smaller telescopes are going to be removed and the barren peak restored. The site in the canaries is at lower altitude and the atmosphere is more turbulent there.

  18. Building a resort hotel is far more destructive than building a telescope.
The on going environmental costs of human habitation are the real problem.

  19. The continued lack of respect for the planet & indigenous ppl by "those running the 🌎" is TRULY DISGUSTING, DISTURBING, & DIABOLICAL!😡😠
