  1. As a Hong Konger, the protest in Hong Kong is not about against capitalism or pro socialism. It's about freedom and democracy on political level. In terms of economics, Hong Kong has always been the success of ultra capitalism with sufficient welfare to most of the poor when it comes to societal level. But the problem mainly boils down to the political level with communist China government. China as run by communist party they are actually practicing command capitalism when it comes to economic level but they are of course an iron handef autocratic authoritative totalitarian mafia state as of their political structure and attitude.
So to all socialist or non socialist in the world, don't get the Hong Kong protest wrong and don't fully use western political ideology to look at the problems in Hong Kong and China. Yes, there is a huge imbalance when it comes to income inequality and housing. But the govt of HK don't have any intention to fix this problem and the communist china love it. So they can put any blames to whatever happens in the society in Hong Kong and raise it to political level to the communist china favour in order to tighten the grip and control of Hong Kong.

So cut the socialism/ capitalism/ feudalism/ liberalism crap.

The issues in Hong Kong is beyond all the isms. If it was just the problem with capitalism VS socialism protest in such scale would have occurred long before 2019 as poor HKers are famous for living in the cage way before the transfer of sovereignty to China and during the Brits period.

Real genuine Freedom and Democracy and hopefully a full autonomy are the end goal regardless all the ism.

  2. They don't even care about viewership any longer. Greyzone and Moderate Rebels are the cream of the genuine online left. There was some sort of hostile takeover by some dude with a sketchy, probably IC, related background at TRNN. Foundation funded now, so don't feel any need to contribute.

Not a word about US destabilization, Joshua Wong and NED. Complete bullshit as usual from the new Democracy Now left gatekeeper. There are more honest right wing outlets out there. So sad. Paul Jay must be pissed if he isn't getting a big payout (and even then).

  3. Many here are complaint of how these protests seem to be either a western back coup attempt or just pure terrorism. Well local election results happened and with 71% turn out the pro-Beijing parties just got wiped out. And before you claim rigging the results have been certified by the government and Beijing who have many reason to not support the pro-democracy parties or give them any political ground

  4. Some extracts from my posts on this issue in recent months – (Not necessarily in strict order & some repeats)

"Majority of the rioters are brainwashed, misguided delinquent teens; being used as cannon folders and pushed along by orchestrated paid agent provocateurs from both inside and outside of HK. The larger context is treacherous & powerful vested interests from within (the real "OWNERS" of HK i.e Property, media tycoons & their minions, the ex-colonial judicatory etc) wanted to maintain a neoliberal utopia in HK, and they are falling out and having major power struggles with the central government in Beijing; indications are they are covertly joining forces with the subversive foreign influences from the outside such as USA inc. and quasi colonial influence of the UK."

"As far as influences from foreign entities and powers are concerned; yes there is an element of that, but these so called "political movements" would not have happened without the supports of powerful established vested interests from within; and it's not just from the so called "pro-democracy" camps either but across the political spectrum include the so called "pro-establishment" camp! It's Just like a large scale "villagers fighting over water"; which is a frequent occurrence in the Chinese culture & history! While on the surface, it would appear that the protests were spontaneous, it's anything but; these are the symptoms of vicious power struggles between various established vest interests behind the scene for ultimate control over HK; those "real owners" in HK whom owned just about everything and actually have substantial power and influences over what can happen in HK. These are the real culprit behind the scene; The young people & students are cannon folders for their ambitions which has been misled by the "manufactured consent" from the ruling elites and their minions.

BTW: In HK's context, Universal suffrage as demanded by the pan-democrats is just a more sophisticated way of putting in a puppet controlled by the "owner" class; politicians across political spectrum are either influenced, bought & paid for by the owners; the real "rulers" of HK."

"What the "owner" class in HK really wanted is to cement (for perpetuity) their economic power and political influences even after 50 years period of "one country, two systems" ended. The tool to achieve this is via universal suffrage elections; they know they can use their power influences to put in a puppet of their choice to win a rigged election (There are a lot of techniques involved; manufacturing consent, controlled media etc etc suffice to say money makes the mare goes!) These elected puppet will act as gate keepers for their wealth and political influence. Of course, they will claim to have the "mandate of the people" because of "Free, Open and fair" election. And of course, the sheeple are all happy because they think they had a choice!!"

"These are the real powers who control just about every aspects of life in HK socially & economically. In fact, The structural social problems (housing affordability, extreme disparity between the rich & poor) that many HK people suffered at the moment are years of exploitation by this class; monopolies & controls of just about every business & industry; building up housing bubbles and many other "rent seeking" schemes; they have been very smart to brain-washed the HK sheeple to think universal suffrage will solve all these problem which themselves created, pathetic isn't it!

And they manage somehow to lay the blame entirely to Beijing for not supporting political restructuring in HK; clever; don't you think?! Of course, there are many reasons why the HK sheeple fall for it; one of them being that they have not been able to let go of the delusional superiority & prejudice feelings they have toward Mainlanders which were developed from the "glorious" past; and when the present reality would not justify this illusion, it hurts their misguided pride the hatred & jealousy developed; these blinded their judgement and so can be easily manipulated by the "OWNERS" class."

  5. Americans forget that we live in a country that fought 8 years for independence from Empire. The French armed and backed us to create chaos for their enemy – Britain, but no one (th French in particular) had to convince American Patriots to fight. People want to believe that America has tricked 200,000 educated Hong Kongers to face down police brutality day after day for 6 months. That isn't plausible.
The Hong Kongers are not US puppets. The US may or may not be promoting chaos on China's doorstep, but the motivation behind the protesters of Hong Kong is, above all, democracy.
Trump and the US ambassador obviously don't like Hong Kong protesters. They call them rioters. Well Patriots were rioters too, but the goal was clearly not mayhem or French influence.
The protests are courageous and should be an inspiration to all who want democracy.

  6. "It's raining . All over the world. Tonight, the longest night." Bombs, bullets, tear gas, talking points, slogans, promises, platitudes, pablum, lip service, propaganda, euphemisms, jargon, disinformation, and lies. "It's raining. All over the world. Tonight, the longest night." Thank ya'll for excellent reporting.

  7. The anti-PRC left in Hong Kong is basically non-existent and you want to come to us with a title claiming socialists are the core of their movement? Your ability to find a half-dozen people in HK willing to say they support socialism but think the PRC is an evil capitalist nation doesn't change reality. Hong Kong is a capitalist stronghold in a communist nation. The protesters are overwhelmingly pro-capitalist. In what universe do you believe they're going to break off from the People's Republic and it not turn into even more of a capitalist playground? Leftist coverage of Hong Kong in the last few months has finally revealed to me an important fact about the white leftist's worldview. When push comes to shove, deep down in your hearts, the ugly truth is that a lot of you hate the Chinese more than you hate Capitalism. Do not become an outlet peddling yellow peril nonsense, Mark.

  8. Partly true but looking an the wrong perspectives.. kind of mixed up. Clearly somebody is delusional on facts.

Nothing too bad about current Chinese Hybrid Communism and conformance to most democracy countries selectively.
Never let the name Communist deceive you, it may have more to offer than most democracy countries. HK has been free country most of the time until recent demand for "LAWLESS FREEDOM" demanding freedom to kill, arson, destroying properties and People's Autocratic to cause injury if you do not agree with Terrorist. Since last 20 years these has been story telling that university in HK has been secretly mentoring Independence for HK, would this be true, how far would this be?

  9. The movement in Honk Kong is in no way, shape or form a 'socialist' movement. This is sadly the wishful thinking of Kevin Lin. Yes, the reasons for initial demonstrations ARE complex, but the leaders of this movement are NOT protesting against rising inequality – this is not even mentioned in ANY of their demands. They have met with Western Finance Capital in Washington and New York in order to calm their fears. Here is the 'complex' situation in a nutshell:
    https://www.globalresearch.ca/hong-kong-protests/5687142
Perhaps you should have interviewed some these people as well. You are basically following the line of the Economist and Western Finance here. Yes, China practices State Capitalism as well, which makes it even more ludicrous to suggest that this is some sort of grass roots socialist movement in Hong Kong. The protest leaders have had long standing ties to Western Capital, not to ANY socialist movements, period. Your guest even admits that the socialist movement is 'pretty weak' in Hong Kong right now, so NO, this Socialist Students and Labor Activists are NOT at the Center of the Struggle as your headline suggests.

The REAL NEWS is now engaged in WISHFUL, rather than a REAL assessment of the situation, which is incredibly dangerous, given the immense geo-political power struggles at work here. Very disappointing.

  10. The Hong Kongers are amazing. Caught between Neo liberal and state capitalism and the different factions within the movement. From America to Sudan people are standing up for democracy. It ain't easy but when you fight – you win. The ideas live and spread around the world.

  11. Yeh right….. when have "socialists" been on the CIA payroll. The US has gone into Hong Kong to stirrup social and civil groups into a counter-revolutionary force against Communist China, which is part of the Obama policy " pivot to Asia ". Same goes for Venezuela, Iran, Bolivia, Columbia, and a good part of the world.

  12. Marc, A while back I saw a report that Steve Bannon and Miles Kwok(Guo Wengui) are advising and giving money to provocateurs.
