What does ‘environmental racism’ mean? What does it look like in practice? When researchers discovered that residents of the small, unincorporated, predominantly Black community of Tallevast, Florida, were experiencing abnormally high rates of cancer and miscarriages, it was clear that something was wrong. Tallevast, a town shaped by the legacy of segregation, is the site of the now-defunct Loral American Beryllium Company, which was purchased in 1996 by Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor in the world.

In this episode of “Rattling the Bars,” Eddie Conway is joined by James Manigault-Bryant to discuss how the military-industrial complex poisoned residents of Tallevast and destroyed their property, their environment, and their health. Manigault-Bryant is professor of Africana Studies at Williams College, a descendent of one of Tallevast’s founding families, and co-author of the Boston Review article “Poisoning Tallevast.”

  1. TCE is in widespread use in the Silicon Valley of California. The tanks leak into the ground water. Silicon Valley is wealthy and white. Many private water wells were contaminated. This is a serious environmental problem, but it does not appear to be targeted against black people. It is a problem for everyone. When the accusation of Racism is made, it reduces your credibility because the accusation is misleading.

  2. Afraid to get out of her car? The only thing missing from these kinds of people's gated communities are security measures to keep the population safe… FROM THEM! Maybe some barbed wire, armed guards, and a gate that only swings inward would minimize that?

  3. I grew up in Southwest Detroit. We had Marathon and Great Lakes Steel. There were a lot of health issues in our community due to the toxins being released. Asthma was really prevalent there.

  4. Environemental racism is also in haiti. except the global environement instead of nature and haiti is the nucleus as well of the results of global warming, tides increase, hurricanes get worse and it all falls into their plans of consolidation and increased demobilization of the first country to end slavery in the world. They know have many gangs running the country, a interugnum in the form of electoral process is ongoing. 10,000 displaced in Martissant. Lets get this info out there.

  5. This type of environmental catastrophe happens to communities of every race and color in the rainbow scattered throughout our country which is sad and should never happen yet it does. Even so, when it happens to a black community whether the community was already established and a factory was built within that community or visa versa, but when it happens to a black community, especially in "this day and age" all of a sudden it becomes a racial thing. Reality is, this should never happen to any community. Manufacturing plants must follow strict and safe guidelines and NEVER be built near any community when there is a risk of polluting or poisoning the air, ground, water and above all, the people.

  6. Thank you very much for sharing this great dialogue with your chanel from Europe merci beaucoup 🌺🌼👍🏾

  7. NEXT TIME YOU GO OUTSIDE LOOK UP, WHEN YOU SEE THE STREAKS OF CLOUD
LIKE MATERIAL MILES ACROSS THE SKY, IT HAS BARIUM, STRONTIUM, ALUMINUM
AND MANY OTHER CHEMICALS INCLUDING LITHIUM, YES THE DRUG LITHIUM ?
EVERY STATE GOV. IN THIS WORLD HAS BEEN POLLUTING AND DESTROYING THE
LAND AND WATER'S FOR YEARS ??

  8. It clearly is a case of environmental racism and terrorism. I don’t understand how people can deny that when we have gentrification, where people of color often have to leave communities that are being developed into communities that have more pollution. This is another prime example of war on race and class. It’s sad that because people are poor, due to institutionalized racism that there isn’t any basic infrastructure that actually records the amount of death, cancer, and co-morbidly as a result. People are systemically being silenced and vanished without dignity even as they die. This is fascist tyranny. This is genocide. Mainstream media will not report real news like these.

  9. Irresponsible labeling… why do we ignore the psychological damages when we haphazardly call something racist – when it’s not intentionally done bc of race?
I agree we need solutions for low income communities who get the shit end of the stick, but can’t get on board with this presentation.. Manipulating the term “systemic racism” is a disservice to those who’ve actually experienced genuine racism from govt policy that specified race. Plus, this presentation feeds those who don’t claim there’s a problem to begin with.
