Charles Hopkins, better known as Mansa Musa, is a 70-year-old social activist who was released from prison on Dec. 5, 2019, after being locked up for 48 years, nine months, 5 days, 16 hours, and 10 minutes. Now a free man and cohost of TRNN’s original show Rattling the Bars, Mansa Musa speaks with Executive Producer Eddie Conway about how the two met while they were both incarcerated, joining the Black Panthers, and about Mansa’s life before, during, and after prison.

  1. Charles Hopkins murdered a Park Police officer, Raymond Hawkins as he was stopping his accomplice's robbery at a 7/11 in Prince George's County. Officer Hawkins had struggled with Hopkins' fellow robber but had gotten him under control and then Hopkins shot him in the back. Hopkins could have walked away but he decided to shoot a man in the back so he could finish their robbery. He was initially sentenced to life in prison without parole but a later court ruling allowed him to plead guilty and get resentenced.

His victim, Officer Hawkins only 28, has been dead longer than 48 years, nine months, 5 days, 16 hours and 10 minutes and will stay dead. Shame on you for trying to turn this cold blooded murderer into some kind of victim.

  2. This was, and the only word I have for it is Delicious. It was good, knowledgeable, illuminating, genuine, wisdom, heartfelt amongst many other words. This is so needed especially for those who are and have been incarcerated under whatever circumstances. The atrocities that has been placed upon our people are much for one human heart to bear that's why it is so important that we as a people should and must support, encourage, and edify the people who have put theirs hands to the plow in these missions. One important thing that stand out for me from this brother is recognizing that you don't have to be in cages or behind bars to be a victim in an oppressive systematic world, but what you do going forward. I could go on but I will digress. Thank you brother for having this brother on to tell a lil of his story. Shalom

  3. Thank you once again, Eddie, and also to Charles Hopkins who is now Mansa Musa. Thank you, Mansa!

  4. Peace to you Eddie C and Mansa Musa ✊🏾 I like what you are doing with the reentry citizens in DC 👏🏿 Is there a program like that in BMORE?

  5. I just put a thumbs up. I'm a coward and I can't listen to a man who was in prison for 43 years without getting emotional. Sorry brother and all the other people who have to spend entirely too much time in prison. I wish I would live for the day when they put the corporate elites in the powerful and the oligarchs in prison but I'll be dead in my grave before the common people of the world unite and actually eat the rich and he powerful

  6. Do we have a National inmate advocacy program yet! The “justice system” is nothing less than human trafficking bond slaves under a simulated legal system. These men’s property have been stolen.
