Jessup, Maryland is home to the state’s only women’s prison, the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women, commonly known as “The Cut”. For years, advocates fought for a women’s pre-release center, which would house prisoners eligible to go out on work release, receive an income, and take family leave. Despite passing a bill into law mandating the construction of a women’s pre-release center, the state has only pledged $2 million towards its construction. Monica Cooper, founder and Executive Director of the Maryland Justice Project, joins Rattling the Bars to break down the significance of the pre-release center, why the state government is dragging its feet, and the real impact official inaction is having on women in The Cut.

  1. I did not think Maryland put woman in jail for anything ? They are The Divorce Industry staple in Maryland ! , They can lie cheat and collect triple child support and Maryland defends them for it ! , Probably the worst state in the Union with it's Old 16TH. Century , Or 1600 criminal laws still being enforced against ALL common sense ! . Those Colonial States are the worst ones legally speaking. But Judicial Corruption is the New Law unto themselves today in every state of the Union.!

  2. Many comments on here are disrespectful. Whomever is in charge of Community Guidelines – check. However, you monitor and keep the conversation open and relevant and out of the hands of trolls would be deeply appreciated by viewers who come here for information, policy solutions and problem solving. Please continue to include incarcerated women in your media about the evil effects of mass incarceration. To the listener or viewer who thinks the state is only required to do the minimum rather than the optimum — define minimum. Eventually all prisoners not doing life without parole, not put to death re enter society. How do we want them to reenter⁉️And for those who don’t care, why are you even here in the way of those who do care? Checked.

  3. @12:39 – Maybe because they’re hard at work accommodating the rapists and other men that are being placed into women’s correctional facilities nationwide? Just a thought. She’s correct for mentioning that the lack of pre-release options for women constitutes sex discrimination.

  4. Well, Maryland is a pretty small state; I would hope they don't need more than one prison…plus, that makes it easier to focus on what happens there…but you $till have to DO THAT!

  5. Uh huh, yeah, uh huh, yeah, that's right, yeah, uh huh

  6. Thank you for advocating for justice. People deserve the opportunity to re-enter society and as a practical matter, I’m certain it saves the state money.

  7. Wouldn’t it be easier to tell people to not commit crimes, get a job, stop having kids you can’t afford, get job training before prison, don’t count on the government, don’t victimize anyone, etc. Crooks are not more special than any other citizen. Taxpayers should not be on the line to provide anything other than the basics for those inmates.

  8. This is so important. I never thought the women werent able to gain a stability reentry services the men have. Now I wonder how many states discriminate with the female prison system vs the male. Maryland do your job and get these prerelease stabilizers in place.

  9. Are actually wearing BLM shirt??? Did you know that BLM is a psyop?? It has nothing to black lives.

  10. Are you discussing the trans identified men who are being transferred into womens prisons? If you’re not, you’re complicit in a State backed rape factory.
