The 13th Amendment has created an inhumane (but perfectly legal) system in which multinational corporations are able to regularly exploit prison slave labor in the U.S. for profit. In this special, extended episode of “Rattling the Bars,†TRNN Executive Producer Eddie Conway is joined by Dr. Joy James and Dr. Asatar Bair to discuss the persistent use of prison labor in the U.S. and how people can organize to abolish it.
Dr. James is a world-renowned scholar and activist, an Ebenezer Fitch Professor of Humanities at Williams College, and the author of numerous books, including “Resisting State Violence,†“States of Confinement: Policing, Detention, and Prisons,†and “Seeking the Beloved Community: A Feminist Race Reader.†Dr. Bair is an international public scholar, a professor of economics at Riverside City College, and the author of “Prison Labor in the United States: An Economic Analysis.â€

Stop punishing crime >end slavery!!!! Go Chicago
You have the power to stop involuntary servitude …stop commiting crimes
Yea, save money for when they get out .. like 1$ an hr will do that when the food is so horrible a bag of chips is the best option. And they say they’ll learn a skill but the job is unskilled??? Ok maybe not a fire fighter but they don’t get the certification that firefighters need to become one on the street.
Gov call it rehabilitation regardless of reality!
Everyone in jail or prison should refuse to lift a finger, make a phone call or order a package of noodles. It would be tough but it would put the system on it's knees.
The 13th amendment didn't abolish slavery it legalized it!!!
Not shocked sadly i mean corporations call citizens human capital stock. They dont value human life but their own.
Behind a profit is a Politician. Profiting off the labor of a Prisoner seems illegal. Tho, they could pay for: incarceration, restitution, child support by NO less than min wage, so not exploited. Aside of hrs, wages on public record, strict reg. to avoid the Shawshank Redemption story.
Income?… seriously?…provide for those on the outside?…WTF…no one makes any income of any worth…
I absolutely understand the ending of Chattel slavery and simultaneous retention of slavery by and for the state, be it Federal, state, county, or municipal…of these they incarcerate…including providing labor to private enterprise…and now today…the neo liberal approach of replacing government publicly funded approaches with private subcontractors to replace public utilities, such as large parts of our military…once public education system… electrical utilities… and our prisons…private prisons subcontracted by the state, marketshared corporate entities with only never ending growth of profits and scale to enrich the shareholders…most shares are owned by the same "few" who own most capital in this prison/corporate police state…anyway I understand that…I am wondering why none of these folks engaged in this discussion seem to see or grasp the truly systemic and ever darker future this reality presents…
The 13th Amendment Legalization of ongoing Slavery :
The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution declared that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Formally abolishing slavery in the United States, the 13th Amendment was passed by the Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified by the states on December 6, 1865.
*The 13th Amendment makes it clear that slavey is legal with one simple word : “Exceptâ€.
So seriously … what are these other discussion about REALLY if legal slavery is still allowed to exist???

They get around the "involuntary" aspect by limiting the availability of jobs, making it a privilege. They used to pay 15 to 30 cents an hour. It was used to supplement their food and clothing through the commissary. The items in the commissary are priced to minimum wage economy, not the prison economy.
Yes, it IS your TAX DOLLAR if it is at the State or City Gov't, as they are Currency USERS, just like Businesses & Households. We have an OUTDATED view of the Economy being under those SAME MICROECONOMIC CONSTRAINTS, which are $$'s or whatever their Currency is in, as long as it is a Sovereign Monetary Nation & the Currency ISSUER, like the USA, Japan,, Australia, China, Canada, the UK, etc., NOT the EU! They GAVE UP their SMN Status! (Sovereign Monetary Nation) #OurMoney * Read #TheDeficitMyth & #LearnMMT!
HAS SOCIETY BENEFITTED FROM PRISONS?
WHAT GOOD HAVE PRISONS PROVIDED THE NATION?
PRISONS ARE GUILTY OF MURDER, FRAUD, EXTORTION, RAPE…TO NAME A FEW.
TIME TO ELIMINATE THIS FORM OF PUNISHMENT, IT DOES NOT WORK, IT HAS UTTERLY FAILED, AND MUST DIE!
THE 'STATE' IS LEGAL FICTION, AS THEY EXIST ONLY ON PAPER.
THE PEOPLE OWN THE 'STATE'.
WE CREATED GOVERNMENT TO SERVE US AND OUR NEEDS, BUT IT FAILED. GOVERNMENT NOW THINKS IT IS OUR MASTER, AND NO LONGER SERVES OUR NEEDS.
GOVERNMENT HAS EXTREME CRIMINALS, RAPISTS, DRUG DEALERS, EXTORTIONISTS, MURDERERS, AND PEDOPHILES.
WHY ARE POLICE TERRORISTS SO PROTECTED BY OUR SO-CALLED JUSTICE SYSTEM?
WHY ARE THE EMPLOYEE CRIMES IGNORED, WHEN MOST DESERVE LONG PRISON TERMS.
POLICE MUST BE ERADICATED, IT IS A PREDATORY EMPLOYMENT THAT HAS NO JUSTICE, EXCEPT AS PROTECTIONS FOR TERRORISM AND TYRANNY AND ALSO TREASON THEY COMMIT AGAINST THE PEOPLE?
FORCED SERVITUDE IS SLAVERY, NO MATTER HOW YOU EXPLAIN IT.
FORCED LABOR FOR ANYBODY, IS SLAVERY, WHEN THE INCARCERATED GAIN NOTHING FROM THAT LABOR.
POLICE ACT LIKE SLAVE MASTERS, ASSUMING POWER THEY CAN MOT POSESS BY ANY CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT, OR THROUGH ANYTHING HELD IN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.
POLICE ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL STANDING ARMY SOLDIERS.
WHERE DOES THE CONSTITUTION GRANT EMPLOYEES POWER OVER THD MASTERS, WE THE PEOPLE?
HOW DID WE BECOME SERVANTS TO OUR SERVANTS?
Democracy? You meant republic, right? Huge difference.

Are law enforcement/corrections officers qualified to do anything useful in society? There are two problematic populations (cops and incarcerated people) here that society seems to have no meaningful place for.
Good to see Santa getting out of the rapacious capitalism business, and using his clout to fight slavery.
