  1. It's easy to shift blame than to introspect and find a solution to the problem. It's human nature and an easy route.

This is the art Right wing is good at – shifting the blame. There's always 'them' to blame for everything. Immigrants, Europeans, Muslims, Mexicans, Ukranian, Bangladeshi and you name it.

The problem and and crisis of inequality and desperation of middle and lower class is not new. It was inevitably since the past century because of population boom and extremely fast technological progression.

The blame game is not the solution.

The potential world war 3 is at the horizon and is going to be a massive civil war which would collapse the civilization from within.

Unless we accept there are problems and look for solutions instead of turning on each other.

  2. disillisoned who do you think makes up the majority of the votes, stupid it is the masses… not your middle class illusion who are actually in the poor class as well…

  3. Try to explain the reality of class dictatorship to a window cleaner who works the expensive neighborhoods of the city and you will be met with incredulity – "But the bloke i work for is decent..have a laugh and a joke and all that" etc. Walden Bello clarifies the realities and demarcations of class interests and hopefully open the eyes of many to the truths hiding in plain sight.

  4. “Fascism is the last card of capitalism” – one of my landlords who was the proprieter of the Double L Cafe , Liverpool Road , London N1 in the 60s, before he emigrated to New Zealand. He was a paid up member of the CPGB

  5. I think there are 3 options:

Capitalism controls us. (The status quo)

We control capitalism. (China's socialist market economy, for example)

A classless, stateless society. (Would require simultaneous revolution of world's leading nations)

Cornering private insurers out of healthcare would be a good start for the US. And primacy of the state in education. The Reagan/Thatcher neoliberal push of the 1980's should have been put down decades ago. Already, the UK is seeing a threat to NHS and university management has been corporatized for some time.

Corporate democrat and republican politicians in the US have nothing to offer but the status quo, which is rapidly becoming untenable.

  6. Your “damned if you do and damned if you don’t” when the left, liberals, and progressives don’t understand the evolutionary biology and biological determinism of human tribalism and authoritarian psychology manifest through church-state systems. The biological phenomenon of church-state tribalism and conservative authoritarianism represents a historically persistent and asymmetrically influential component of the human condition, which will either rise by organizing against the despised modern enemy of post-Enlightenment philosophy secular social democracy, or alternatively rise by flourishing through market fundamentalism and neoliberalism, where the function of markets that serves highest bidders is easily captured and gamed by socially and economically conservative gatekeepers. There is nothing validly or desirably “Darwinian” about such a market process captured by socially and economically conservative interests, except to select Homo sapiens for extinction through the Anthropocene, 6th mass biodiversity extinction, and climate catastrophe. The market democracy serving this persistent conservative authoritarian hegemony is additionally normalized and enabled by the controlled opposition of affluent professional-class centrist liberals, which parasite off the underbelly of the authoritarian hierarchical stratified classist church-state system while being placated by social liberalism and class protectionism.

  7. It started even before we were starting to move from hunter/gatherers to farming communities. As such those who saw each person who specializes in a given task as an archetype for a necessary role that insures that the community's needs are met and no one has more or less value than the other. This was matriarchy. But, there were always a few who, even though their needs were met (other than those of a raging testosterone storm) they placed more importance on their indulgences than on the welfare of the community. We, as a species, suffered them far too much. Now they make us suffer. Suffer not a sociopath.

  8. Wow! This was an amazing and illuminating interview and author. One of the most relevant topics and discussions at the very moment it is needed and helpful. Sending link to Faiz Shakir in Sanders campaign urging him to listen to it in its entirety ASAP. That last "women's movement" component absolutely profound and spot-on insight.

  9. Bello is very wise. However when he spoke of the role of the women's movement in opposing the rise of the far right I felt in two minds. I feel there is a crucial role here. Perhaps in the global south this is happening. But in the 'rich' countries I fear the latest incarnation of feminism is playing a very counter productive role, by denying class and emphasizing identity politics "boss feminism" is feeding the far right.

  10. It is surprising how many right-wing opinions are expressed in this comments section. If, as I suspect, they are mostly genuine, I take it as a good sign that many are curious , as I am, to hear views from across the spectrum.

  11. Good to have a thoughtful discussion of the big trend in global politics. Bello draws an insightful distinction between the Populist Right in the South which is openly Neoliberal in economic policy, and in the North where, at least in appearance, it champions the common people against the financial elite.

  12. how to combat the right? you could whine for a while as per usual. prob just submit anyway. its not like there is anything you could do lol

    Trump 2020

  13. This was so crucial for me to hear right now. This has started to new awareness of the left's role (or lack of) in shaping the world.

  14. For Chinese political academic scholars, we say the West's far right is China's far left (Maoism). Maoism is anti-capitalism, so when Trump drains the swap, there's a lot of overlap with communism, especially considering his daughter's childcare policy, which very much tends towards socialism. Maybe they just want to give socialism to certain people only.

  15. Please stop bringing the corporate media's left-right divide rule narrative to free media. Please focus on the policies. Modi is relected with an unprecedented mandate. He is a Bernie Sanders of India. He also wants to decolonize India. The Marxist and liberal left needs ti be extinguished/purged from all institutions. They have sold out the country just like Obama, Clinton, etc.

  16. "The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing." -Burke
Nearly ALL Democrats are right wing. When they move to the right, the "Overton Window" moves to the right.
The Germans who refused to fight fascism are called Nazis…and Americans have allowed their government to Do Worse.

  17. We cannot and must not understate the influence of official lies and outright disinformation from the media and politicians. I wonder what the world would look like if people were simply informed.

  18. Throughout history, right wing regimes brought censorship with them. What you're calling the modern right is oriented AGAINST censorship and for the most part are being silenced and smeared by what you call the left. Maybe those old terms and ideas no longer apply.

  19. Why "Confront"? If the right is rising, then it's a symptom that the left is ignoring important issues and neglecting what people want. Why should we automatically accept millions of poor people in our countries that will destabilise us and cause social problems, easy for rich celebrities and politicians to judge, when they know they will never move to their neighbourhoods, lower the value of their homes, harass their daughters, steal their jobs for lower wages or lower education standards at their schools because all of a sudden 60% of kids don't speak english (or whatever native language) at home. Why is it 'racist' to discuss and have such concerns, when it is mostly a social, economic and personal security issue? Isn't it the leftist Governments that pursued and allowed all these wars that caused these people to migrate? Why is there no debate on the root causes of migration? what about the left's failures in providing economic equality, isn't that what the 'left' is about in the first place? all talk, no action. If you fail people, they will try anything else just to seek change, look at America, they even chose a retarded asshole like Trump rather than more neoliberalism and fake democracy.

  20. Much better headline. Now maybe more will watch this, but you should know the Left left us (moderates) long ago so we went to the center… what did we find. Trump populism. Funny how that works. How does the Left react? I know we will double down and move farther left. Stupidity rules the party to hate, shame and blacklist any opposing view. This strategy will not end well for them. It's counter intuitive to what people actually want.

  21. All left need is to be truthful and equal for all , no matter who they may come across. Only way to deal Right. But it is impossible for left.

  22. Imagine the world we would leave for future generations if we don’t resolve this rising issue of right wing extremism! It would be a world of constant fear, hate and violence. 😢
